A walk through Tarout Castle feels like stepping into one of the oldest stories in the Eastern Province.
Located on Tarout Island in Qatif, Tarout Castle is one of the most well-known historical landmarks in the area. The castle is associated with the Portuguese period in the Gulf during the 16th century, while the hill it stands on contains archaeological traces dating back thousands of years. Saudipedia says the site has revealed artifacts from around 4300 BCE, and other references commonly describe the mound as being about 5,000 years old. 
The fort is often linked to Portuguese restoration and military use in the 1500s, especially around 1544, rather than a simple single-date construction story. Historical sources also note that the site had earlier foundations before the Portuguese period. 
This place had been closed for renovation, but it was opened again for the Eid holiday period, with the last day mentioned as March 24 and visiting hours from 2 PM to 6 PM. Since temporary opening schedules can change, anyone planning to go should verify locally before visiting.
