Our SIGGY OF THE DAY happens to be one of my (co-host Pat that is) all-time favorite songs, and it sheds a light on the nature of popular music of the early to mid 70s, specifically on how it was broadcast at the time. FM radio was a rather niche medium; both cars and home transistor radios tended to only offer AM radio. As a result, Pop music tended to be heard more on AM radio, while FM was relegated to genre specific platforms like album oriented and progressive or harder rock, jazz, classical and harder core R&B. AM radio was where mainstream pop music was often broken, and what’s more, it was greatly diverse. AM stations would not discriminate against an artist or song that sold the soap for them. Thus on the stations in the hometown Jamin and I grew up in, you might be apt to hear songs by the likes of Three Dog Night, Dionne Warwick, Frankie Valli, Chicago, the Carpenters, and even T-Rex … and then you’d hear a Spinners song. In that time, a common popular song was their hit “Rubberband Man”. It was marvelously imaginative and groove-provoking song particularly to a 10 year old perched in the back seat of his parents AMC Matador station wagon. It later got renewed fame in our Western PA region in the late 70s as the ‘theme’ of sorts that got played at Three Rivers Stadium when relief pitcher Kent Tekulve came into the game. His tall lanky figure and elastic sidewinding delivery fit the song perfectly. Great stuff, and still makes me smile fifty years later; the power of music.

. . . #postpunk #newwave #80smusic #marthaandthemuffins

Sunday mood - sounds, moves & vibes on my battered Bob radio 📻 This week “Midnight at the Oasis” a sultry, 70’s classic sung by Maria Muldaur. Released in 1974 and written by David Nichtern, it became a Top 10 hit and her signature song. She didn’t chase the charts, instead Maria carved out a serious career in blues, jazz, and roots music, recording over 40 albums 😮 and earning huge respect among musicians 🎶 Do you remember where you first heard it? Maybe you discovered it in 1998 when The Brand New Heavies made it a chart hit? I’m dedicating this beautiful song to my beautiful friend @jayeellaruth 💜 (maybe one day I’ll ask her to share her musical experience of being a part of The Brand New Heavies story). #MariaMuldaur #70smusic #thebrandnewheavies

Last Monday Matters of the month… and we’re ending it in a swirl of feedback and psychedelia. The Yardbirds were never content to stand still — and Happenings Ten Years Time Ago captures a band pushing rock into stranger, more experimental territory. Distorted guitars. Shifting moods. A sound that feels ahead of its time… and slightly out of it. The past, the present — all blurred into one. A fitting way to close out the month. 🎸 More at bsideman.blogspot.com Link in bio.
