Planting hedgerows is a simple and powerful way to increase biodiversity 🌱 This World Wildlife Day we share some of the work our gardens team have been undertaking in Home Park. Nicholas Garbutt, Park and Estate Manager, talks to us about the importance of these hedgerows for the local wildlife and biodiversity. 🌲
Dead hedges are one of the simplest ways to boost biodiversity in a garden.
By weaving prunings and woody material between stakes, they create instant habitat for insects, beetles, fungi and small mammals, while also providing shelter for birds.
They’re a great alternative to burning or removing green waste — turning it into something living instead.
Small intervention, big ecological value.

Earlier this month, we attended the Wilding Gardens conference in Manchester, an inspiring gathering of minds - gardeners, designers, ecologists, entomologists and enthusiasts - inspiring us with ideas of how they are gardening more sustainably.
We caught up with @isabella.tree, author of Wilding and co-owner of the Knepp Rewilding Project, to ask what she most looks forward to as spring arrives. For her, it’s the soundscape: insects stirring, birds returning, and the garden waking through layers of life and noise.
What spring sounds signal the season changing for you? Let us know.

What a brilliant afternoon with Nursery planting a new hedgerow that was given to school by @woodlandtrust Helping us do our part for restoring habitats, trees and hedges encourage lots of wildlife with food like berries and nectar. They also provide shelter for birds and small mammals who can live and hide in them and be protected by the thorns and prickles some of the plants have. We’re so excited to see it grow and see what animals and insects make it their home. Great job Nursery 🌱

Ooop…the conservation posts are about to start rolling in 😅
I announced my running challenge & then just dipped from social media lol 🤪 but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been working hard behind the scenes! Now I can finally show you guys some of the brilliant projects I’ve been involved in ☺️
It’s not just the “flashy” over-seas conservation that deserve all the attention, there’s a lot of work needed right here on our door-step 🍃
Starting with…☠️dead-hedging ☠️…despite the misleading name, dead hedging is a fantastic way to support wildlife in your garden🐭.
Not only does it provide fantastic habitat for all sorts of wildlife, but as the hedge rots the nutrients are recycled into the soil below! ♻️ Making dead-hedging a brilliant alternative to chucking or burning your unwanted garden trimmings. 🌏
Instructions on how to make your own dead hedge can be found on the RSPB website :

Britain’s hedgerows stretch over 700,000km —
that’s 1.5× the distance to the moon 🌕
And yet…
in just 75 years, we’ve lost half of them.
The rest?
Being removed, cut too hard, or mismanaged at an alarming rate.
Hedgerows aren’t just “pretty boundaries”.
They’re wildlife highways — offering food, shelter, nesting and roosting sites for birds, mammals and insects.
They store carbon.
They cool landscapes.
They connect habitats.
So this year...
🌱 choose a hedge over a fence.
It’s one of the simplest ways to make a huge difference for wildlife.

I chatted to Emily Milhouse, Senior Nature Conservation Officer at @glendale_uk, about why wild green and blue spaces matter in our cities 🌱
Ponds like this one at Folkestone Gardens are small but mighty 💪 supporting wildlife, cooling our neighbourhoods, and giving people a place to pause, breathe, and connect with nature ✌️
If you’re passionate about nature and want to help rewild Folkestone Gardens pond, come and join us:
🗓 Saturday 21 February
⏰ 10am–12.30pm
📍 Folkestone Gardens Pond (playground side)
We’ll be gently clearing the pond to help keep it a thriving habitat — for birds, insects, amphibians, plants… and people 🐸🐦🌾
No experience needed - just enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in ✨
📩 DM me or email

A gift for mum that brings the countryside back to life 🌿
Traditional English hedgerows are disappearing — yet they are home to over 600 plants, 65 bird species, 21 mammals and 1,500+ insects.
By planting 100 metres of hedgerow, with 60 trees and 5,000 hedging plants, you’re restoring vital habitat and protecting biodiversity for generations to come.
✨ £300 is more than a gift — it’s a lasting eco-investment in wildlife, landscape, and the future of our natural world.

A little hedge-ucation on why native hedges are just phenomenally underrated.. one could even say hedge-endary? Here's bit of footage from today's hedge-ventures to give you a taste!
Okay I'll stop with the puns now but the next hedge planting event is March 7th in Freshford, Bath and we'd love to see you there!
Crossing fingers for less wet ditches - but good weather is never guaranteed...
I also can't guarantee that I won't laugh at you when you're stood in said wet ditch - but I do promise to join you in there!
Now let's go plant some HEDGESSSS

When we headed to the Wilding Conference in Manchester this January, we caught up with @tomstuartsmith and @charlie.harpur to hear their thoughts on how we as a nation can make a move towards putting nature first when creating our gardens.
Tom reminded us that gardening isn’t just about aesthetics, truly sustainable spaces support a rich variety of living things, helping landscapes thrive naturally while encouraging biodiversity. Charlie shared the importance of doing a little bit of everything. By introducing diversity, you create complexity and it’s this layered, balanced approach that helps gardens become healthier, more self-sustaining environments.
Rather than worrying about doing the ‘right’ thing at the ‘right’ time, focus on building complexity, welcoming nature in and allowing your garden to evolve more naturally.

Hedge season is coming to an end and what better way to see it off than to finish this 100m mixed native hedge on a stunningly sunny World Rewilding Day?!
This is part of a big collaborative project with local energy networks to improve biodiversity around their sites and for this one we will be back in April to create a perennial wildflower meadow.
We’ve had so many great conversations with local people who are excited about the return of birdsong to the area!
