Roberto Garachana went to U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler's town hall on Feb. 1 because he wanted to hear from his representative. He didn't necessarily plan to speak out and he certainly didn't plan on getting escorted out by the local sheriff.
But, the 28-year-old U.S. Navy veteran said, he doesn't regret his actions that night.
"I really believe, democracy isn't something you have, it's something you do," said Garachana.

In a crowded harbor on Spruce Head Island, where Midcoast Maine folds into the Atlantic, a lobster turf war is brewing — not over fishing territory, but over which boats can squeeze a living out of the island’s tiny working waterfront.
On one side is Spruce Head Fishermen’s Co-op, a century-old bastion of about 40 independent lobstermen. On the other is Mazzetta Co., the multimillion-dollar Chicago-based seafood giant that buys local lobster from 58 fishermen to sell in the global market.
The dispute between waterfront neighbors has turned this sleepy fishing village 15 minutes south of Rockland into a legal battleground. At the heart of the battle is a proposed dock expansion and an old, strategically moored smack boat once used to carry lobster to market.

Rockland County's rules for general contractors got a significant overhaul Tuesday, April 14, after the Legislature heard from scores of often-impassioned contractors and homeowners split on changing licensing rules.
Supporters of the change, including many contractors, said Rockland's rules, put in place in the 1980s, were too onerous. Several said that by giving licensing power to a volunteer Home Improvement Licensing Board, the county had restricted the number of licensed contractors.
That, supporters said, put a pinch on homeowners by limiting the number of licensed contractors. Several speakers also said they had been frozen out of the county by what they deemed arbitrary calls by the board.
Many other contractors decried the changes as a loosening of rules in place to protect homeowners and keep the county safe.
