FRENCH GOTHIC đŸ‡«đŸ‡·đŸ’€ The literary genre of the Gothic doesn’t develop the same way in France as it does elsewhere. That is because France is Catholic, and the Gothic emerged primarily among English and German Protestant writers. In the canonical Gothic novels (like The Castle of Otranto) Catholicism is seen as this mysterious, occult form of faith. For French writers
Catholicism wasn’t as exotic. Instead, in France you get a parallel tradition of the roman frĂ©nĂ©tique (the terror novel). These works engage with Gothic themes of violence, transgression, evil, corruption, and melodrama, but tend to have slightly less focus on medieval superstition and folklore. READING LIST âŹ‡ïžâŹ‡ïž (1) Marquis de Sade, ‘Gothic Tales’ (Pushkin Press, translated by Margaret Crosland) and ‘The Marquise de Gange’ (Oxford World’s Classics). (2) Jacques Collin de Plancy, ‘Dictionnaire Infernal’ first published in 1818, with illustrations by Louis Le Breton added in 1863. (3) Charles Nodier’s ‘Smarra, or the Demons of the Night’ (1821). An incubi / nightmare / vampire dream sequence. (4) Victor Hugo ‘Notre-Dame de Paris’ (1831) (5) ThĂ©ophile Gautier, ‘La Morte Amoureuse’ (1836) (6) Joris-Karl Huysmans, ‘LĂ  Bas’ (1891) (7) Gaston Leroux, ‘Le FantĂŽme de l’OpĂ©ra’ by Gaston Leroux (1909) #bookstagram #gothic #literature #readinglist #history
In a world obsessed with happy endings, quick resolutions, and polished perfection, authors still return to gothic stories for one simple reason: They linger. Gothic fiction has never just been about haunted castles, storms, or shadows creeping along the walls. It’s about what lives inside us. It’s the grief we carry quietly, the love that consumes instead of comforts, the parts of ourselves we were taught to hide. And no matter how modern the world becomes, those things don’t disappear. I have always been drawn to gothic storytelling because it gives me permission to explore what’s uncomfortable. There’s also something timeless about it. Long before trends, algorithms, and fast content, gothic stories were built to remain. They weren’t written to be consumed in a moment. They were written to follow readers long after they’d closed the book. And authors crave that kind of impact. Because deep down, every writer wants to create something that echoes. #gothicfiction #gothicliterature #gothicbooks

Not all literature is peaceful. Some books whisper from dark corridors and haunted castles. That is the magic of Gothic fiction. #GothicLiterature #EnglishLiterature #LiteratureStudents #UGCNETEnglish #LiteraryWorld
I personally label a book as gothic based on vibes, but what do you think really makes a book “gothic”? Is it an unsettling atmosphere, a dark and looming manor, characters with ~unusual~ proclivities? How do you define gothic literature?đŸ–€đŸ„€ #gothicliterature #darkfiction #bookopinions
