The 69,138 fans fell silent. Then the gates flew open.
On June 9, 1973, Secretariat and Ron Turcotte didn’t just win the Belmont Stakes. They destroyed it. Running head-to-head with Sham in suicidal fractions, Secretariat turned the final turn alone.
“He is moving like a tremendous machine!”
By the wire: 31 lengths ahead. 2:24 flat. A record that still stands 50+ years later.
The 25-year Triple Crown drought was over. A “tremendous machine” made history forever.
