This route in Richmond connected parts of the Virginia Capital Trail, Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, and Belle Isle, all fun and scenic running spots in the city.
🚙 Parking: You can park for free at the Virginia Capital Trail at Shockoe Bottom and enjoy 2 miles on the path through the city before getting to Belle Isle or pay for parking right at Bell Isle Parking near the bridge. Or, book an Airbnb or Hotel in Shockoe Bottom and walk/run the city on your visit 🏙️
The Capital Trail is over 50 miles long and great if you want to run long or escape the busyness of the city on your trip. Belle Isle is an ideal place for a short easy run- it’s 3 miles across the bridge, around the island, and back. For more mileage and another fun bridge crossing, Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge is a short run east of the Belle Isle Bridge.
Pro tip: in the summer, end your run on Belle Isle with a swim in the river 🌊☀️
Coffee/food: Blanchard’s coffee will forever be my favorite Richmond coffee. It’s a short drive away but if you’re looking for coffee near your run, Ironclad is a walkable distance from the parking at Shockoe Bottom. Also walkable from this parking is Lulu’s (amazing brunch/lunch) and Urban Farmhouse for anyone with food allergies.
I’ll hopefully get to run on some Virginia trails later in this trip but while we’re near the city, this route makes running on the roads very fun 😊
