F*ck a shortboard. (Respectfully) Sometimes a mid length truly is the answer. Having a board that allows you to get into waves early, but still allows you the freedom to do most turns and maneuvers is such a cheat code. Well, sometimes yes, a short board is gonna allow you to have higher performance. When you’re in subpar conditions or in crowded lineups, having a mid length gives you the ability to have a fun session instead of missing waves and having unnecessary anxiety. Here I am again, apparently 'wasting waves' because I'm not hitting 360's on a short board. For me wasting waves is when you don't enjoy it because you're putting pressure on yourself to hit fancy maneuvers. I'm happy to 'waste waves' by grabbing a finless, being silly, having fun and making memories simply doing whatever I want because I feel that's where the wave is taking me.
