Correction! TRAP, TRAM and pre-nasal tensing around the Great Lakes. You caught me! Yesterday in video I said 98% of Americans have a TRAP-TRAP split. That was...sloppy. You guys are awesome. As we get ready to gather around the Thanksgiving table, a little conversational guidance can go a long way. In What We Say, What They Hear, Georgetown sociolinguist Deborah Tannen explores the hidden signals that shape our everyday conversations — and reveals how even the best intentions can get lost in translation.

Your heritage language holds power. ✨
I want to say this clearly. I’m aware that having access to multiple languages, mobility, and education is a privilege. Not everyone is given the same starting point, and not everyone has the same resources or freedom to move across systems and borders.
But this message is still important.
Because language itself is one of the few tools that can expand your options over time regardless of your starting point.
Keeping your heritage language is about keeping doors open. It’s about not closing off parts of the world — or parts of yourself — before you even get to choose.
You don’t need to use every option.
You just deserve to have them.
And that’s why this conversation matters. 🤍

Have you ever pretended to have an accent?
Sociolinguist Rob Drummond talks about why his father-in-law, who moved to Wales, sometimes puts on a Welsh accent during tourist season.

This week was World Linguistics Day! To celebrate, I’m attempting to tell you the story of how I became a sociolinguist in all of the languages that impacted my life 😄
(This was the scariest video I’ve ever made 😅)

Do people say you speak “Tanglish”? Do you or your friends or kids switch between Tamil and English (or any other language)? That’s not a bad thing—it’s actually pretty cool! Have you heard of translanguaging and code-switching? (You can tell us in the poll)
They are both linguistic phenomena often observed in multilingual contexts, but they serve different purposes.
**Translanguaging** refers to the process where bilingual or multilingual speakers use their how many ever languages fluidly and interchangeably to communicate. It emphasizes the idea that speakers draw from their full linguistic repertoire, integrating languages to enhance meaning and expression.
**Code-switching**, on the other hand, involves alternating between or blending languages or dialects within a conversation or utterance. This can be a strategic choice to convey specific meanings, establish identity, or navigate social contexts. Code-switching is often influenced by the audience, setting, and topic of conversation.
Code-switching is an integral aspect of translanguaging! In the context of Family Language Policy at schools, translanguaging is used to highlight how familles seamlessly blend their languages in daily interactions.
In summary, while both practices involve the use of multiple languages, translanguaging focuses on integrating languages for holistic communication, whereas code-switching is about strategically shifting between languages in response to context.
Creating an open, comfortable, and non-judgmental environment for children and adult heritage language learners, as well as bilinguals and multilinguals, allows them to engage in translanguaging and code-switching, fostering their confidence as learners. 🌟
So, the next time someone tries to tease you for your ‘Tanglish,’ you can tell them that you are Translanguaging and it is your superpower 💪🏾
