READ MORE 👇🏼 5 things I hate about full-time vanlife After five years of living full-time in a camper, there are definitely a few things I still struggle with. 1. Loneliness You’re alone. A LOT. Vanlife isn’t like backpacking, where you automatically meet people in hostels or on tours. If I want to see people, I usually have to actively look for them, make plans or drive somewhere to meet them. Most days on the road, it’s just me and Ollie. And although I really enjoy being alone, sometimes it gets lonely. 2. Everything is new, all the time A new place, new roads, a new supermarket, figuring out where to sleep, where to get water… Every few days you have to understand your surroundings all over again. Adventurous? Yes. Mentally exhausting sometimes? Also yes. Sometimes I just want to know where the bloody bread is. 😂 3. You’re pretty vulnerable Your camper is your vehicle AND your home. If it breaks down, you potentially lose both at once. Suddenly your house, bed, kitchen, transport and basically your entire life are sitting at a garage. 4. Heat ☀️ I actually love rain, cold weather and even snow in my camper. Heat is much harder. Especially with Ollie. I can’t just leave him in a hot camper, so during summer I’m constantly thinking about shade, temperatures and where we can safely stay. Sometimes the weather basically decides where I can go. 5. Feeling unsafe as a woman Honestly, this happens much less than people might think. Most of the time I feel perfectly safe travelling alone. But you do have to stay aware of your surroundings. Sometimes it’s simply a guy staring at you for way too long next to your camper and that little voice in your head going: yep, we’re moving. Funny enough, most of those uncomfortable situations happened in the Netherlands or other parts of Europe, never outside of Europe! I still love living on the road.
