On March 12, SMO returns to @cornishcollege_music Raisbeck Auditorium for an immersive evening exploring time, spatialized sound, and performer/composer agency. The Midwest welcomed us with a balmy pre-spring weather in the high 60s. Our first stop – @augustana_illinois where we had a wonderful time working with student composers and string players leading a string class, workshopping and recording composers works. A big thank you to the director of chamber music at @uiowamusic @elizabeth.oakes4 who had the incredible idea of collaborating with the Asian and Pacific Studies Center at the university to bring us out to do a joint residency at the School of Music AND the AP Studies Center. We coached chamber music, played and shared about our Angel Island work with History, Anthropology, Chinese Language classes, and performed our Facing the Moon program with original poetry by @gennyeshe , music by @waigwun @meilinatsui_composer @tree_wong and visuals by @oting1 and @mhellar After Ben’s initiation to all things H-Mart right outside Chicago in Naperville, we brought @netzerosnat Galim Levanim to life with the help of 12 pedals total (page, looper, volume) at @constellationchicago . Sending deep gratitude to all who made these connections possible! #midwest #tourlife #music #quartet #chamber

I wrote a piece that @thebridgemusiccollective is performing on Sunday! It’s called Escapade, “a usually adventurous action that runs counter to approved or conventional conduct” - Merriam Webster dictionary. I’m very thankful to the musicians who have learned this risky piece with a lot of notes and tricky rhythms. It’s been a second and half since I’ve written an ensemble piece, but what made this recent premiere at Michigan State something extra special was that the person who made it all happen is my oldest friend. I can’t believe that I’ve met this guy in 7th grade, with English still very iffy. We lived down the street from one another and now we get to do something like this together some 23 years later or so. @yujijones you’re the absolute best and thank you for your soul, heart, and artistry. The student performers of Musique 21 really put their hearts into that performance and the whole show was just beautiful.
