Often called an inverted temple…
Rani ki Vav, Patan, Gujarat.
An 11th-century stepwell built not as a monument, but to store water.
As the water level changed, people walked down these carved steps to access it.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site ♥️

Hyderabad buried THIS under 2,000 tonnes of garbage for 300 years.
A 17th-century stepwell — six levels deep, built by the Nizams, capable of holding 22 lakh litres of water — hidden in plain sight in Secunderabad.
Today? It glows every evening like a dream.

India’s infinite staircase!! 🥹
Still can’t believe that this was constructed in 9th century? What a masterpiece of architecture that is -
- The stepwell is 13 stories deep (approx. 30 meters/100 feet).
- Contains about 3,500 narrow steps arranged in a precise, symmetrical, crisscross pattern.
- The steps form a mesmerizing geometric design, often studied for its mathematical precision.
- The temperature is cooler at the bottom (around 5–6°C lower than the surface).
If you are visiting Jaipur, definitely go here. It is just a 2-3 hours drive to reach… ♥️
Chand Baori in Abhaneri, Rajasthan is one of the largest and deepest stepwells in the world, famous for its symmetrical architecture and mysterious history. The temperature inside the well is about 5–6°C cooler than outside, making it an ancient example of brilliant engineering.
