This might just be the perfect tarp for tent users. I usually always take a 3×3 m tarp when hiking, but if I’m camping with a tent that has a vestibule, I tend to leave it behind to save weight and space. That said, the Tarp 5 has completely changed my mind and it’s now something I’d bring even when using a tent, especially if there’s a chance of rain. It’s lightweight and packs down small thanks to its integrated stuff sack, and setup is quick and straightforward. The unique shape, combined with pre-attached guylines and D-rings, makes it easy to pitch a clean, taut canopy that feels like a natural extension of the tent rather than just a flat rectangle strung up between trees overhead. When setting it up with a tent, it also only requires a single branch, which is pretty convenient. I’ve used it with several different tents now, and it pairs well with all of them giving you a comfortable sheltered space to sit with a chair or relax in your tent with the door open. It even works well with a bivvy while still allowing you to keep a low profile with a small footprint. It’s especially handy this time of year when showers come and go, letting me stay dry while making a brew or cooking without losing the view. I didn’t expect to use it on this outing, but the weather had other ideas, bringing passing showers and even some hail so it was nice to have the large covered space. Anyways, as someone who’s always preferred a classic 3×3 m tarp (and I still do for a dedicated tarp camp), I didn’t expect to like this uniquely shaped one as much as I do, but it’s definitely won me over as perfect complement to a tent 👍.
