The history of the Sunsphere You know... the giant floating ball in the sky in Knoxville? Well, it’s story goes further back then just being a landmark. Originally constructed for the 1982 World’s Fair, “Energy Turns the World”. This was Knoxville’s moment to hit the main stage. It’s over 266 ft. tall with a giant 75 ft. gold-infused sphere at the top. Today, it stands as East Tennessee’s most recognizable landmark. 👇 Comment “Knox” for the Ultimate Knoxville Guide Cooper Denton, Realtor Luxury and Relocation Specialist 📞865-320-2692 ✉️[email protected] 🌐cooperdentonrealtor.com 🔗 Link in Bio for More!

🌞 Sunsphere Observation Tower – Knoxville’s Golden Icon Built for the 1982 World’s Fair and officially opened on May 1, 1982, the Sunsphere remains one of only two surviving fair structures in World’s Fair Park—the other being the Tennessee Amphitheater. Fun facts: The initial design intended the sphere to mimic the Sun at a symbolic 86.5′ diameter, but practical engineering scaled it down to 74′. Impressive stats: Tower height is 266 ft (81 m), crowned with a shimmering 75 ft (23 m) gold-laminated glass globe . The sphere itself weighs about 600 tons and sits atop six steel-truss columns. Gold-glass marvel: Each window has 24‑karat gold dust implanted—there’s even seven different panel shapes throughout. Originally multi-functional: During the Fair, it hosted a restaurant (offering themed items like the “Sunburger” and “Sunburst” cocktail) and a paid elevator ride to the observation deck for $2. Post‑fair transformation: After 1982, it sat mostly unused. In 1986, the city bought it for $750k, and it later housed offices for convention-center staff. Rebirth for visitors: A renovation in 2007 reopened the 4th‑floor observation deck (holds 86 people), later adding lounges and event floors on upper levels . After a pandemic pause, it reopened in Feb 2022 with a new Welcome Center and refreshed exhibits. Panoramic views: Those who visit can see downtown Knoxville, the Tennessee River, University of Tennessee, World’s Fair Park, and on clear days, the majestic Great Smoky Mountains. Cultural icon & quirky legend: It’s appeared in Simpsons lore (famously not a wig warehouse), postcards, and even as part of the Knoxville Smokies minor-league logo. Protesters once hung a “Stop the Bombs” banner from it in 2000. 🌞 It’s time we all appreciate the #Sunsphere. Especially considering the golden globe in the sky could have been a silver sphere on a slab of concrete. 🤯 While the structure is the undisputed icon of our #ScruffyCity, we almost had something else entirely in #DowntownKnoxville.
