The giant triton sea snail (Charonia tritonis) is one of the few natural predators of crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster), the spiny coral-eater that can damage reefs when populations spike. Tritons aren’t fast, and this isn’t a chaotic hunt. It’s slow, deliberate predation—precision at reef speed.
That’s what makes the moment compelling. The triton advances with steady muscular motion, extends its proboscis, and begins feeding at the starfish’s base. The starfish doesn’t “explode” into action—it responds the way echinoderms do: slow arm flexing, tension changes, and gradual curling. The camera can stay close because the behavior itself is stable and readable.

⭐ Starfish: Amazing Creatures of the Wild Ocean! 🌊
Did you know? ⭐ Starfish, also known as sea stars, can regenerate lost arms, and some species can even grow an entirely new body from a part of their original body! These fascinating marine animals play an important role in maintaining the balance of ocean ecosystems. Beneath the waves, nature is full of incredible surprises! 🌊🐚

Striped Sun Star hanging out with some Gobies. 💙
Striped Sun Stars (Solaster stimpsoni) can been seen with vivid reds, golds and blues stripes from the center down their long arms. Reaching about 20 inches across, they be quite large and really stand out on walls and rocky boulder fields.
Distinguished from other Sun Stars by the stripes emanating from their center down the middle of their arms. it can be hard to see this on some specimens when there is minimal color variance in the stripe colors. I have been making a point to film as many different colors as I can , and this is the bluest one I've found so far.

A little terror for your Tuesday!
It’s easy to forget that the stationary animals living on rocky seafloor habitats are, in fact, animals. They may resemble a rare bloom stretching towards the sun; however, many of these deep-sea *not-flowers* are carnivorous animals. This basket star (a suborder of brittle stars) was filmed by ROV SuBastian pilots at about 270 meters depth during the #Taleof2Canyons expedition. These many-armed ophiuroids capture their prey with ease. Escape is unlikely thanks to tiny hooks and sticky mucus-covered limbs. Once ensnared, tube feet shuttle the meal towards the animal’s mouth.
During the #Ecosde2Cañones expedition, a team of oceanographers is investigating two submarine canyon ecosystems, examining how their shape might influence how animals live and reproduce in an area of the Ocean known for its abundance.
Everything in the Ocean is connected. When scientists observe thriving deep-sea ecosystems, they know that physical, chemical, and geological conditions support life in that area of the Ocean. By deploying a suite of tools from R/V Falkor (too), Dr. Silvia Romero and the team are collecting data to understand how deep-sea canyons, currents, and oceanographic properties sustain marine food webs and create biodiversity hotspots offshore of Argentina.
Culcita Novaeguineae, or “Pillow cushion Star”, has short arms and an inflated appearance of a pin cushion. A wise person once told me, “we need to retrain the 10 second attention span of the public.” And I agree, which is why 16 second reels no longer give me jitters about not being seen. Also, do you see the face of Pennywise the clown as it lands in the sand?
