In verse 40 of Surah An-Nur, Allah gives the example of a deep sea. It is covered by waves, with more waves above them, and clouds above those. Layers of darkness upon darkness, so much so that if a person stretches out their hand, they can hardly see it. This is not merely a literary description. As our understanding of the oceans has advanced, the meaning of this verse has become even clearer. The oceans contain distinct layers of water, powerful currents, and internal waves. These layers overlap, internal waves form beneath the surface, and sunlight cannot penetrate to such depths. Scientists consider these regions among the most complex and least explored places on Earth. What is remarkable is that this multilayered description appears in the Qur'an, revealed more than fourteen centuries ago. The Qur'an reminds us that true light comes from Allah. Even when we are surrounded by darkness, if He wills, He grants our hearts guidance, peace, and hope. The depths of the sea serve as a profound reminder that without Allah's divine light, a person may lose their way, but with that light, they can find direction even in the darkest of times.
