One our most magical experiences in West Africa was at @the_kasinstitute in the Volta Region.
The Kweku Andoh Sustainability Institute (KASI) is an eco- resort and research/ training institute which offers opportunities for those who visit to learn about sustainable practices, holistic healing modalities, and navigate a renewable lifestyle that is rooted in an Afro-Indigenous perspective.
We came in the dry season, yet the rain was abundant. It felt like a rainforest, like The Universe was pouring an abundance of blessings over us. It felt like heaven on Earth.
We took some courses, hiked, planted, ate (a lot!). But above all we just were present and for that I’m grateful.
Every night we are providing Iftar to the community in Kanga Village, thanks to the donations of who decided to support our work. Let’s continue bringing joy together 🌱🌺🤍🫶🏼
There’s something about Kakum that just hits different.
It’s one of those Ghana experiences that stays with you. Not because it’s flashy, but because it makes you feel small in the best way.
If Kakum has been on your mind, don’t just talk about it.
Download the Akwaaba App and start planning your Ghana trip properly.
In the olden days instead of mixing and straining through water, Fijian elders would sit by the fire and chew the fresh Kava root… a ritual of connection, storytelling, and respect.
Nowadays, traditional Kava is enjoyed by straining through water and drinking in a coconut shell called a Bilo.

The people of Kitava don’t “eat high carb.”
They eat in context.
On the island of Kitava in Papua New Guinea, about 60-70% of calories come from whole-food carbohydrates like tubers, fruit, coconut.
From their local environment.
Here’s what we can copy:
🦶 They’re barefoot and grounded daily
☀️ They wake and sleep with the sun
🏃♀️ They move naturally, all day long
🥥 They eat real food, grown in their soil
📵 No blue light at midnight. No DoorDash. No desk jobs.
(We may not be able to avoid our desk jobs… I have one 🙋♀️but we can get up and move our bodies)
Their metabolism isn’t just fueled by carbs — it’s regulated by sunlight, movement, earth contact, community, and zero ultra-processed food.
Diet is never just macros.
It’s geography.
It’s lifestyle.
It’s light exposure.
A 70% carb diet in a circadian-aligned, outdoor, equatorial island context is not the same as 70% carbs under LED lights, high stress, and 8 hours in a chair.
Health is contextual.
Always has been.
