🎶 Rather than retelling Bizet’s Carmen, Bourne reinvents the story as a gripping dance thriller, using cinematic storytelling and contemporary choreography to explore love, obsession, betrayal, and desire.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Matthew Bourne at a pre-show event at the nhow London hotel. Humble, charismatic, and refreshingly down to earth, he described Car Man as a “dance thriller.”
“You can’t do that with a story people already know. The performance has to be self-explanatory, like a film. If you need to read a whole synopsis to understand what’s happening on stage, then it’s overcomplicated. With Car Man, you won’t have that issue.”
He was absolutely right. The storytelling is so clear that the emotions unfold without a single word, just don’t expect a predictable ending. Expect the unexpected. Car Man will leave you breathless.
