Last weekend, we stepped into “The Willows” - a two-hour, nonstop, immersive horror show in Los Angeles. WOW!!! This is one of the most amazing and captivating shows I’ve ever experienced. 😱 No spoilers here, but this production is wildly intricate. There are 7 possible narrative tracks, each with different levels of actor interaction, scares, and graphic content. That means no two experiences are exactly the same. From the moment you enter the mansion, you’re pulled into a world of twisted family dynamics, relentless suspense, and eerie mysteries. And you’re not just watching; you’re part of the story: talking to characters, solving tasks, and uncovering secrets that shape your night. If you love immersive theater, live for haunted houses, or just want a one-of-a-kind experience - you MUST see “The Willows.” This is a night you won’t forget. The story behind this architectural gem: The Willows Mansion was built in 1910 by John Sinnott Jr., for his new bride, Mary Henrietta Luce. They named the mansion “Rose Garland” after an ancestral home in Ireland. At one time the Mansion included 30 rooms and 5 baths. The mansion still contains many original architectural features that add to the historical value of the property. Fast forward to 1972 when Radnor Township purchased the mansion and the surrounding 47.5 acres from the Zantzinger family. They renamed the property “The Willows” in recognition of the beautiful Willow trees located on the property near the pond. The Mansion was then rented out for weddings and other events until 2011, when mounting expenses for repairs made operations untenable and the Mansion was closed. It sat shuttered for almost 10 years while the Township struggled to find someone who could repair and then operate the Mansion in a viable way, relieving the Township of the burden of maintaining it. The Willows Park Preserve was formed as a nonprofit organization in 2017 by a group of Radnor and area residents who envisioned restoration of the Willows Mansion as an opportunity to preserve a valuable historic asset while creating a place to experience community connection through year-round programming focusing on nature, wellness, local history and the arts. In 2019, WPP entered into a 25-year lease with Radnor Township, enabling WPP to realize this vision. The WPP’s core values are Community, Inclusivity, Open Space, Historical Preservation, Life-long Learning, Health and Wellness, Arts and Culture, Collaboration. Community members from all over the Main Line and beyond have enjoyed events and programs for all ages, including many free events. The Mansion is open to the public and available for tours. Restoration is ongoing including critical projects such as a major renovation of the Mansion’s kitchen and additional infrastructure improvements that still must be completed in order to preserve this local treasure for today and tomorrow. My used-pallet picket fence has been going strong for 8 years now and needs replacing. I’ll keep it up until I see new life coming from the willows rods.
