Tiny Tim — First Appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson — April 6, 1968
When Tiny Tim stepped onto The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on April 6, 1968, American television had never seen anything quite like him. Dressed in Victorian-inspired clothing, singing in an ethereal falsetto while strumming a ukulele, he performed Tiptoe Through the Tulips and Living in the Sunlight, Loving in the Moonlight with complete conviction. What could have been dismissed as novelty instead became one of the most unforgettable television debuts of the era, instantly turning Tiny Tim into an unlikely cultural phenomenon.
Behind the eccentric image was a deeply knowledgeable musical archivist. Tiny Tim spent years collecting and reviving forgotten songs from the early 20th century, preserving America’s popular music heritage long before it became fashionable to do so. His singular blend of vaudeville, sentimentality, surrealism, and outsider artistry has since inspired generations of musicians, proving that originality often outlasts convention.
