Help save the forests 🌳🌳 Sorry to be the bearer of more bad public lands news, but our forests are seriously at risk. Last week, the U.S. Forest Service announced major changes: - They’re closing 57 of 77 research stations, which studies how wildfires, climate changes, and pests have impacts on our forests. Many of these research facilities were conducting long term studies. - They’re shutting down all 9 regional offices that manage 154 forests! - And they’re moving their headquarters from Washington D.C. to Salt Lake City The U.S. Forest Service manages 193 million acres of National Forest and their research is pivotal to our forests and the impact of climate change. Many studies will be disrupted and forest members will leave their jobs all while damage from wildfires and climate change continues to worsen. These changes will put these landscapes, the wildlife, and all of us at risk. I've been doing the seasonal hiring on @wyoming_hotshots for quite a few seasons and this is a common question I get this time of year. FAQ - Can I get on a saw as a rookie? Yes, we're going to watch and evaluate everyone's saw handling, hiking, and swamping abilities, which are the 3 key traits you'll need. Our original saw team 3 this year were two perms who have been tasked with other responsibilities in the last half of the season, and they've been replaced by two rookies who are doing great. At the beginning of each season during critical 80, we do a saw hike to see how people handle the extra weight as well as a saw day. During the saw day, we break into small groups, each with either an evaluator, faller C, or a strong B. The focus is mostly on felling techniques, but what we're really watching for is saw handling abilities, so we know who our next potential saw teams might be. Things that help prepare you prior are working on units that do a lot of project work. I’m not to say what’s going on or what you should think, you should do your own research and have your own opinion. But I just wanted to make people aware of what’s happening. Over the past few days, thousands of national park workers have lost their jobs and many more have had their job offers for the season rescinded. This includes park rangers, parks staff, forest service staff, many of which are my friends. These are the people that keep our parks safe, clean and running. The people that have dedicated their lives to preserve what we all love. Without them, our parks will be destroyed. I’m not American so I can’t call them mine, but I sure do spend a lot of time and money there and would hate for a big private company to own and rebrand it for the rich. I have put a link in my bio of how you can help, it’s to send a message to congress to help our parks.
