Need something easy for Christmas this year that’s heartfelt? Try homemade vanilla extract! To make standard single-fold homemade vanilla extract, use approximately 1 oz of vanilla beans for every 8 oz of alcohol (such as vodka, rum, or bourbon). By count, this usually requires 5–8 medium-sized beans for 8 oz of alcohol, or roughly 3-4 beans for a 4 oz bottle.

Key Details:
Bean Type: Grade B beans are preferred for extract because they are drier and more concentrated.
Ratio: 1 oz of beans (by weight) per 8 oz of spirits is the standard, though some prefer up to 1 oz of beans per 4 oz for stronger, “double-fold” vanilla.
Time: Let the mixture sit for at least 6 months for best results.

Sometimes the best things just take a little patience. ✨
Homemade vanilla extract is one of those projects, just a few minutes of prep now, and a few months later you have rich, flavorful vanilla that’s so much better than store-bought. It’s the perfect reminder that small efforts today can lead to big rewards later. Future me is always thankful when past me takes the time to start it.
Have you ever made your own vanilla extract? Tell me in the comments or save this for when you’re ready to start a batch!

Homemade Vanilla 🤍
You Need:
• 12 oz oil dispenser or jar
• 8 whole vanilla beans
• 12 oz vodka
⸻
🍦 Instructions:
1. Prep the beans
• Slice each vanilla bean lengthwise to expose the seeds.
• If they’re too long, cut into halves so they fit in the jar.
2. Add to jar
• Place the split vanilla beans into your 12 oz jar.
3. Add alcohol
• Pour the vodka over the beans, fully submerging them.
4. Close & shake
• Seal the jar.
• Shake gently for 10–20 seconds.
5. Steep
• Shake once per week for the first few weeks.
• After about 6 weeks your vanilla is usable, but the flavor will still develop as you wait! Enjoy!
PRO TIP: add more vodka as you use up your extract to ensure the beans stay submerged (to prevent mold) since it is now diluted you can wait again or start using if you didn’t dilute too much. Keep topping off for about a year with those same beans! And then start your next batch!👏🏻
Save this for later 🤍
