IYKYK. If you don’t- Film star Veronica Lake was known for her “peek-a-boo” hairstyle. “It isn’t true that I was born with a lock of blonde hair over my right eye, but if people want to say so, it’s all right with me,” Lake said at the time. “Actually, I didn’t think up that style at all. It was an accident. When I was making my first screen test, my hair dropped over my eye, and the studio went to work to exploit that different sort of hair-do. All I did was wear my hair the way I was told…. It’s a trademark now.”

I Married a Witch, 1942
She floated through the frame like a spell in silk, eyes half-hidden, smile full of mischief. In I Married a Witch, Veronica Lake was enchanting. With her hair cascading like smoke and a voice dipped in honeyed mischief, she turned comedy into sorcery and glamour into myth.
Her magic wasn’t in her power but her presence, in the way she made even the impossible seem intoxicatingly real. 💌

Veronica Lake showing the dangers of wearing her hairstyle while working in factories during WWII (1943) After her role in the 1941 film I Wanted Wings, Veronica's long, wavy hairstyle acquired immense popularity. LIFE Magazine's 1941 article about Veronica stated, "The 49th minute of the movie I Wanted Wings is already marked as one of the historic moments of the cinema. It was the moment when an unknown young actress named Veronica Lake walked into the camera range and waggled a head of long blonde hair at a suddenly enchanted public. Not since the late Jean Harlow launched the platinum-blonde fad in 1930 had the movies produced such a trichological sensation. Veronica Lake's hair has been acclaimed by men, copied by girls, cursed by their mothers and viewed with alarm by moralists." Unfortunately, this wave of women wearing their hair down and over their eye caused issues when working with machinery. During an appearance on The Dick Cavett Show in 1971, Veronica explained, "During the war years, with the long hair...they could snatch themselves bald-headed if they didn't have a way of catching it back. So, I really had to wear my hair in every style so long as it wasn't hanging loose during the war years." Veronica was born 100 years ago today in Brooklyn, New York! Happy heavenly birthday! 🤍

Ever since I watched “This Gun for Hire” I’ve been wanting to recreate Veronica Lake’s outfit during her fishing musical number.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, I never get rid of stuff so I still had these thigh high faux leather boots that were perfect for this. They are probably close to 15 years old and have obviously seen better days.
The blouse is true vintage and the leggings are another item I’ve had for ages. The only thing I had to purchase was the rain hat, which I can see myself wearing.
I can see this as a future Halloween costume for sure.
Which film noir outfit should I recreate next?
