I was tagged in this video by @bakemydaymimo1 and I think there is a very important conversation here. Many coaches know that calories in and calories out determine whether someone gains weight or not. Not many people dispute this. This knowledge has unfortunately become so simplified that there is an implication that anyone who is struggling must be lazy, and any reasons you might be struggling are simply boiled down to you are lying to yourself. Calorie underreporting is a real thing. It is extensively studied. But, there are also many reason that can cause people to gain weight which don’t always overlap as neatly, like hormonal changes around menopause which can shift to weight gain in the midsection. Most importantly, I don’t think coaches finger pointing and implying people are liars is very helpful practice. If you asked me a question in good faith and I made you feel terrible with my answer, I don’t think I would be coaching as well as I could. I hope that makes sense. P.S., At the end of each post I let you know that if you want to support me, you can order my best-selling book, Everything Fat Loss (Iink in profile). #menopause #perimenopausehealth #menopausejourney #hormones #visceralfat
Left vs Right: Same body, different fuel pattern. Left: Frequent pattern of pizza, burger, fries, cola, donuts - often linked to increase in visceral fat around organs over time. Right: Pattern with salad, almonds, apple, lemon water - fiber, healthy fats and hydration linked to supporting leaner visceral fat levels. The yellow you see is visceral fat illustration - the fat stored around internal organs. This is not about shaming, it is about awareness. Small daily swaps add up. Which swap will you try this week - water instead of cola or salad instead of fries? Save this as a reminder. Follow @body.wisedaily for daily visuals. From a nurse practitioner navigating this too: women ask me all the time why the weight in their 40s and 50s feels so different from weight they have managed before. It is not your imagination. It is visceral fat. As estrogen declines, the research shows fat storage shifts. Before perimenopause estrogen directs fat preferentially to hips and thighs, subcutaneous fat, which is metabolically less active. As estrogen falls that direction signal weakens and fat increasingly stores in the abdomen, visceral fat, which wraps around organs and is metabolically very different. Visceral fat is not just a cosmetic issue. It is metabolically active in ways that drive inflammation, worsen insulin resistance, and compound the hormonal cascade already underway. This is why the same strategies that worked before feel like they are not working now. You are dealing with a different type of fat storage driven by a different hormonal signal. The good news is that understanding the mechanism is how you start addressing it effectively. And there are evidence-based approaches that target visceral fat specifically. Your metabolic health is central to living a healthy and longer life. It impacts our cardiovascular health, and heart disease is the #1 cause for mortality globally and definitely in wealthy countries such as the US (access to too much food, sedentary office jobs, etc). What many people miss is that visceral fat does far more than store excess energy. It behaves like active tissue that can promote inflammation, interfere with insulin response, and increase the likelihood of the health problems Dr. Unwin described. The bigger concern is not appearance, but what may be happening inside the body. Take advantage of this simple string test to find out your metabolic health and absolutely follow up with your physician. "eat less, move more" is why you're still stuck with stubborn belly fat two years later. (reply VISCERAL for my free guide on what actually lowers it 👇) clinical nutrition shows that visceral fat, the deep fat wrapped around your liver and organs, doesn't respond to calorie cutting the way subcutaneous fat does. it's driven by insulin resistance, cortisol, and how your body is sequencing meals and sleep. so when you slash calories and add cardio, you lose muscle and water, the scale drops, and the visceral fat that's actually messing with your metabolism stays put. that's why the scale can't tell you anything here. it doesn't measure visceral fat. a DEXA scan does. if you've had one and your visceral fat number is above 7, that's not a "keep an eye on it" number. that's the number I'd want to see before we changed a single thing about your food. comment or DM the word VISCERAL and my free guide will hit your inbox. it walks you through what to look for on your report and the first lever I'd pull. #visceralfat #bellyfat #stubbornbellyfat #metabolichealth
Not all belly fat is the same 👀 Where fat is stored can tell you more about your body composition and metabolic health. ✨ Stress belly ✨ Lower belly fat ✨ Visceral belly fat Understanding the type is the first step toward choosing healthier habits. 💚 Save this reel for later & share it with someone who needs to see this! #BellyFat #VisceralFat #NutritionTips #WeightLossTips #healthylifestyle
Did you know your waist-to-height ratio is often a much better indicator of your overall health than BMI, or what the scales say? 🩺 While scales only shows a single number, it doesn't account for where your body fat is distributed, or how much muscle mass you have. Carrying extra weight around your waist points to visceral fat - the kind that surrounds your internal organs and is linked to higher risks of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and insulin resistance. Try the string test today! Is your waist MORE than half your height? Click our link-in-bio to learn more about non-scale health transformations 👉️

Visceral fat isn’t just about looking lean — it’s about your health. One of the best ways to get rid of it is actually pretty simple: follow a Mediterranean style way of eating. More real food. More vegetables. Fish. Olive oil. Nuts. Berries. Foods rich in polyphenols. Basically: Smarter fat choices and food that actually supports your body instead of fighting it. No gimmicks. No extreme diets. Just better habits done consistently. Full video on my YouTube now… #visceralfat #fitness #nutrition #fatloss #gym
Visceral fat is the fat I want you to pay attention to most. Unlike the fat you can pinch, visceral fat accumulates around your organs and is strongly associated with metabolic and cardiovascular risk. And simply losing weight doesn’t guarantee you’re losing it. Two things I’d start by looking at? 1. Alcohol 2. Ultra-processed foods. Alcohol can temporarily suppress fat oxidation while your body prioritizes metabolizing it. A diet high in ultra-processed and fried foods can also make it harder to maintain the metabolic health and body composition you’re working toward. Then focus on the things that help you improve body composition: build muscle, prioritize protein and fiber, move throughout the day, strength train, sleep well, and manage stress. The goal isn’t to weigh less because what your weight is made up of is really what matters the most. If you have more muscle, less visceral fat, and a healthier metabolism than you are in a good place. Visceral fat can hide deep inside the body and having excess amounts can be 𝒹𝒶𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓇𝑜𝓊𝓈. This type of fat wraps itself around vital organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart — and too much of it can trigger inflammation that can lead to insulin resistance and chronic diseases. But there are ways to help reduce high levels of visceral fat in the body. Here are three steps to consider 🤍 . . . . . #healthnews #health #visceralfat #healthtips #healthyliving #lifestyle #news #bellyfat #jacquelinehoward #3stepstobetter
