Chikankari is an intricate, traditional form of whitework embroidery from India, celebrated for its subtle elegance and delicate shadow work. Unlike the vibrant colors typically associated with Indian embroidery, Chikankari stands out with its refined white-on-white patterns, stitched on soft, lightweight, semi-translucent fabrics like fine muslins, cottons, and mulmul — a material similar to voile in weight but much softer.
Join Ekta Kaul (@ekta_kaul) for the first class of the virtual World Embroidery Series I on Thursday, January 9th, to learn the foundational stitches of Chikankari embroidery and how to create your own simple design on fine, semi-translucent fabric. Ekta will provide a brief historical overview enriched with slides of both historical and contemporary Chikankari pieces. By the end of the class, students will be equipped with essential techniques to continue exploring and practicing this beautiful, meditative form of embroidery.

A little whitework commission from a couple of weeks ago. I love doing whitework and monograms but don’t often get a chance to do them so it’s always an extra treat when a commission like this comes along. I wish monogrammed linen was more of a thing these days tbh✨✂️

When I come back to a partially filled arch I make sure to not have a gap. If I can get the last stitch to lay almost on top of the half finished arch, I’m happy. Then I just jump from one to the next and hopefully there will be no open space between them. I have seen suggestions to insert the needle into the too of the last stitch when jumping but I didn’t like the look of it. It tends to let the arch twist and I want my arches to lay flat. (Next I’ll be applying a rolling pin 🤣🤣)

Do you struggle with stitch tension? My strategy for working this stitch is to put it in the Goldilocks zone - not to loose and not too tight. Read on to find out how I get my good results.
Too loose: Many people stitch too loose. It’s like they’re afraid that the thread will break if they pull on it! Most people can do with tightening their tension. With the loose tension shown here, the stitch looks blobby and loses all definition. It is not attractive. Eyelets should have a hole, and it should be more than just a pinprick. These eyelets don’t really have holes at all. When you’re working eyelets, come up at the side and go in at the centre. Then when you come up for the next stitch, pull the thread away from the centre to tighten the previous stitch and open the hole. The bars are stitched too wide - traditionally, woven bars were worked narrow. When they’re narrow, you use fewer stitches and it’s actually easier to get good tension. Pull your thread to tighten after each stitch, to narrow down your bars. They should NOT be the same width as kloster blocks - they should be worked narrower. Work the square filet tightly, or you don’t get the full effect.
Uneven: Ensure your tension is even throughout. Don’t allow your stitches in your eyelets or woven bars to overlap.
Too tight: It was really difficult for me to stitch this sample. It’s actually really hard to make this stitch too tight! However, you will see that in doing so, the tightness of the stitching started to distort the fabric, which is something you don’t want to happen.
Just right: Stitches with the right tension just sing!
