Squid Game, a Korean-language drama set to become Netflix's most successful orginal series, has "botched" subtitles which changes the show's meaning, according to a TikTok user. Youngmi Mayer, fluent in Korean, claimed on Twitter, "if you don’t understand Korean, you didn’t really watch the same show". The show details an alternative world where deadly survival games are played by people in debt. If they lose, they die. "Translation was so bad. The dialogue was written so well and zero of it was preserved," said Youngmi Mayer. Youngmi Mayer has detailed examples of the mistranslation in a TikTok video with almost nine million views. However, several people have noticed her comments are in reference to the closed-caption subtitles rather than the English language subtitles. People who are hard of hearing often opt for closed captions, which are usually automatically generated.

YOUNGMI MAYER 영미 메이어는 뉴욕에서 활동하는 스탠드업 코미디언이자 팟캐스터, 그리고 소셜 미디어를 적극적으로 활용하는 인플루언서다. 하고 싶은 이야기를 즐겁게 나누며 사람들과 연결되기를 원했기에 서른셋의 나이에 전업 코미디언의 길로 들어섰다. 한 가지 장르만을 고집하지 않고 자신이 잘할 수 있는 코미디를 찾기 위해 새로운 시도를 거듭해온 그는 꾸준함이야말로 코미디언으로서 살아남기 위해 필요한 덕목이라고 말한다.
