“But George,” you say, “I can afford the monthly payment, so who cares?” I care. I care about you becoming wealthy, being outrageously generous, and living a life unencumbered by debt. By having a car payment, you’re actively saying, “I don’t want to be wealthy. I’d rather look wealthy but stay broke.” This is why the salespeople at dealerships never start by asking how much car you can afford. They instead ask: “What kind of payment are you looking for?” They know they can milk you for more if they can just get you thinking in monthly terms. Car payments are normal, so here’s your sign that it’s time to be weird.
