People make personality judgments based on tattoos… and aspects like size, style, and quality all play a role 👀

Hi, I’m Dr. Alyssa Grocutt - I research tattoos in the workplace and dive into tattoos in general 🖤

Let’s talk about some research on others’ perceptions of tattooed people’s personality.

In this study, tattooed people had pictures of their tattoos taken and there were short descriptions of their tattoos. Others were asked to rate the personality of the tattooed people based on the photos and description.

The tattooed people also provided self ratings of their personality, which we’ll return to at the end.

5 key takeaways:

1) People with small tattoos were perceived as more agreeable and emotionally stable than those with large tattoos, while those with large tattoos were perceived as more extraverted and open to experience.

2) People with traditional tattoos were perceived as more extraverted than those with modern tattoos.

3) People with death imagery were perceived as less agreeable and less emotional stable compared to those with life-related imagery. Similarly, those with disturbing tattoos were perceived as less agreeable than those with comforting tattoos.

4) People with poor quality tattoos were perceived as less conscientious than those with high quality tattoos.

This 4th one is interesting to me 👀 because quality gets brought up when I talk about research on tattoos yet few studies actually assess quality even though it’s likely an important factor in a variety of contexts.

5) People with wacky tattoos were perceived as more open to experience than those with serious tattoos.

Returning to tattooed people’s own ratings of their personality, this last one is the only one that aligned with others’ ratings – those with wacky tattoos rated themselves as more open to experience than those with serious tattoos.

A lot changed for me after my second pregnancy. Between severe morning sickness and pelvic girdle/SI pain, I ended up needing a cane in my third trimester.

As a former national swimmer who always treated my body like an athlete, losing mobility shook me deeply. And honestly, I’ve never felt quite the same since.
