A timelapse view from our @spacex Dragon of the spectacular southern aurora seen in yesterday’s post, a result of a recent solar event. As opposed to the previous aurora I’ve seen, this one danced and snaked its way directly below us, putting on quite a show. I am in awe of this ethereal and emotionally evocative phenomenon.

Thank you to @scripps_ocean and @birchaquarium for providing an extraordinary sea-to-space connection yesterday! We were inspired by the energy in the crowd and were so excited to share our @nasa @iss story. I always appreciate an opportunity to connect with my friends and colleagues at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where I acquired the skills to be a scientist, explored our planet through remote fieldwork, and discovered the value of solid teamwork and exceptional mentorship (and of course, how to surf!).Image credit:Photo 1 — @nasa Photos 2-5 — @scripps_ocean

Some of our weekend time on @iss is spent doing normal Earthly things like haircuts, but of course with the added excitement for the vacuum of space…a literal vacuum attached to our hair clippers to catch all of the cuttings! I brushed off my space haircutting skills and put them to the test on @astro_hathaway, but don’t worry, I would never actually let him touch my space hair, I love it too much!

Nice catch, @astro_reid! From our shared legacy of almost 26 years of a continuous human presence conducting science and technology demonstrations on the @iss to the successful return to the Moon with the Artemis II mission, all of us at @nasa are so excited to have entered the @nasaartemis era. We explore together as one humankind.

Wondering about those bright green and blue lights in the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea? I remember first learning about this phenomenon, the art of squid fishing, while I was a graduate student at @scripps_ocean. Fishermen use these lights to attract plankton and fish, and squid soon follow to catch their illuminated prey. The wavelengths of light used have shifted over the years, with the current scene so colorful it looks like a Christmas village.

Behold the “space cake.” Making cakes on the @iss with our rather limited “baking” supplies is an art, requiring creativity and resourcefulness. I loved making cakes for my crewmates on my first mission and considered myself adept, but our cosmonaut colleagues on Expedition 74 have certainly taken it to the next level. Here’s an example of their recent work, in celebration of 100 days in space for @astro_hathaway and @soph_astro, and my 300th day. It tasted even better than it looked!

Many astronauts experience changes to their vision and/or changes to the structure of the eye during long duration space missions, a condition that has become known as Spaceflight Associate Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). It’s important that we characterize and understand these changes so that we can ensure the health of astronauts while in space and after their return. Here we are obtaining images of the back of @astro_chrisw’s eyes using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). I’m assisting as the operator.
