1984 is Black Flag’s most ambitious musical year.

In the span of just nine months, the band released three albums: My War, Family Man, and Slip It In. Each album being more musically ambitious than the last. While most bands spend their time producing one great record every year, Black Flag spend the entire year dismantling and rebuilding their identity three separate times. More importantly, each release pushed further away from the sound people expected them to make. By that point the band had started consuming a wide range of influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Black Sabbath to John Coltrane and all of these influence re-shaped Black Flag’s music fundamentally. The speed, simplicity, and directness that had defined early Hardcore Punk were slowly being replaced by slower tempos, improvisational instincts, dissonance, repetition, and long-form experimentation. The band wasn’t interested in preserving Hardcore. They were actively challenging its limitations. And that’s why 1984 remains such a divisive year amongst Punk fans. Most listeners wanted Black Flag to keep delivering the same formula that had built their reputation. Instead, the band chose evolution, risk, and uncertainty.

The result was three records that sounded less concerned with fitting inside Punk and more concerned with seeing how far Punk could be stretched before it became something else entirely.
