A little bear with a very big story. 🧸🍯

In 1921, Christopher Robin Milne was given a teddy bear for his first birthday. He was loosely named Edward, then later renamed. Neither Christopher, nor Pooh could have imagined the extraordinary adventures that lay ahead.

That special bear was a J.K. Farnell Alpha bear, made in Britain, and would eventually become the inspiration for Winnie-the-Pooh.

A hundred years later, the magic of that little bear continues.

This photograph (my newest treasure) was taken at Pooh’s 100th birthday celebration at @ashdownparkhotel Park, where I had the pleasure of meeting a rather larger version of his famous friend!

A heartfelt thank you to @poohcornerhartfield for bringing him along, for sharing these wonderful pieces of Pooh’s history at Pooh Corner, and, most importantly, for keeping the memories, stories and spirit of Pooh alive for new generations.

Some childhood memories really do last forever. 💛

Somewhere between a hundred years of Pooh and an evening with @gylesbrandreth, I found myself in rather good company. I suspect Pooh would have called it a Very Good Day Indeed. Thank you, @gylesbrandreth, you were pure joy 🍯🍯🍯🍯 #poohbear #ehshepard #pooh by @100yearsofpooh

One hundred years. One hundred books. One rather special beginning.

After months of writing, drawing and wondering, 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough is finally on its way from the printers.

Just 100 signed and individually numbered copies will form this first Private Press edition, each with its own place in the story.

Some already have homes waiting for them.

This week, I will be opening orders to those on the Private Press invitation list, giving them the first opportunity to choose and purchase their numbered and signed copy.

This is the last call to join the invitation list before it opens.

There is something rather lovely about a book beginning its journey in such small numbers, knowing that each copy will travel into someone's life, perhaps finding its place on a favourite shelf, beside a familiar chair, or somewhere a little bear might feel quite at home.

Two pieces of my own artwork, brought together by a few flowers and a shared love of craftsmanship.

The first is a ceramic sculpture, shaped and finished by hand. The second, a silk scarf featuring my original illustrations, created to accompany 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough.

I have always been drawn to the Arts and Crafts Movement, particularly its belief in the beauty of everyday objects, the value of the artist’s hand and the idea that art should have a place in ordinary life.

It is a philosophy that runs quietly through my book, too.

A hundred years ago, A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard created something extraordinary with little more than words, pencil, paper and imagination.

I love the thought that an object can be both useful and beautiful, that the smallest details deserve our attention, and that things made slowly and thoughtfully carry something of their maker within them.

A little pottery, a little silk, a few flowers. And a hundred years of inspiration.

A little honey, a few busy bees, and a world that asks for very little. 🍯🐝

In 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough, I explore the quiet wisdom of A. A. Milne’s world, where happiness could be found in the smallest things.

This original pen and ink illustration belongs to that same philosophy. A simple beehive, a little patience, and the pleasure of noticing what is easily overlooked.

Perhaps there is something rather wonderful about a world in which a pot of honey is quite enough.

What if the very thing that makes us different is also what makes us so valuable to one another?

Chapter 8, Different Ways to be Human, explores something deeply human within the Hundred Acre Wood.

Piglet worries, yet finds courage. Eeyore carries his sadness. Tigger bounces through life with extraordinary enthusiasm. Rabbit seeks order, Owl likes to be right, and Pooh somehow makes room and time for everyone.

Each character brings a different temperament, with all its wonderful complications and unexpected strengths.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about Milne’s little Wood is that everyone has a place within it, exactly as they are.

Apparently, my pencil has been mistaken for a computer!

Well, I must say, I felt rather flustered.

Instagram has labelled one of my illustrations as likely to be AI.

It isn’t.

Every little line began with a thought, a pencil and my own hand. Hours of drawing, rubbing out, wondering and trying again.

My hand. My brain. My imagination. My work. My biscuit crumbs 🍪

I think Pooh would have found it all rather puzzling. Perhaps he would have sat down for a little think, preferably with something sweet.

100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough.

Suddenly, that title feels rather more important. 🍯 by @100yearsofpooh

A small knock, just loud enough for wondering to begin…

A repost, so instagram and I understand eachother...

Next week, the private press list opens for the sale of 100 Years of Pooh: When a Pencil Was Enough.

Just 100 individually numbered copies will form this first, very special private edition.

A few already have their places in the world.

One is reserved for @thequeensreadingroom a charity founded by Queen Camilla in 2021 to encourage a lifelong love of books and demonstrate how reading improves wellbeing.

Another for the wonderful @gylesbrandreth, creator of @therosebudpodcast , an award-winning podcast exploring people's earliest memories. His enthusiasm for my illustrations quite blew me away, he may even be blowing his nose on them- I do hope so!

One is for The Clare Milne Trust, established in memory of A. A. Milne’s granddaughter, Clare, the daughter of Christopher Robin. Founded through the legacy of Winnie the Pooh, the Trust supports charities helping people with disabilities in Devon and Cornwall to live full, active and independent lives. A beautiful continuation of the kindness at the heart of these stories.

The most important of all is one is for my daughter, who, along with her extraordinary world of toys, is the subject of my illustrations and my greatest inspiration and joy.

Another is reserved for the @thebritish.library, where I hope a little piece of this story will be preserved for generations to come.

The remaining copies will be available to those who understand why the smallest things sometimes matter the most.

When a Pencil Was Enough is the beginning of something very special. A celebration of childhood, imagination and the extraordinary things that can begin with something as simple as a pencil.

If you would like to be invited onto the private press list, please send me a message or go to www.scatterpress.com to register your interest.

After all, wonderful stories continue when we knock at the door.
