NOUS started with a simple idea: invite people to make something together before sharing a meal.

On November 5, with @1010_lab and @thezellijist, we’ll create a collective artwork. Everyone will add to it, so we’ll have to wait until that evening to see how it turns out.

Then we’ll sit down for dinner by @ummami_meltingpot , served on @beyt.ma tableware, and carry on getting to know the people we’ve just created with.

Join us from 19:00

Join us on October 10th — from 10:10 to 11:11 am — for the launch of @1010_wave — our new radio exploring music, culture and stories from the MENA region and beyond. Weekly archives, playlists, and more to come.

For our first session, friend of the house @saibbbb_ brings a personal selection of inherited sounds and family records — music that travelled from Damascus, through Cairo, to Morocco, crossing borders and generations along the way.
Arab pop, funk, disco, jazz & other stories from the archives.

Join us on the wave 🏄🏽

1010 — عشرة على عشرة

When I found this former carpet shop for @1010_lab, the goal was to turn it into a space for experimentation, where better eating, pleasure, sharing, and creativity intersect and feed off one another.

The first step was to strip it back to its bare structure, with an approach that was almost archaeological : preserving, restoring, and engaging in a dialogue with what was already there.
A section of wall was left untouched, like a trace of the past — an imprint, a seal, the place’s living memory. Some see signs or silhouettes in it ; I saw a carpet hanging from the ceiling — ancient, precious — a quiet witness to the passage of time, and another tribute to the place’s history.

Outside, the green zellige tiles on the columns — hidden beneath layers of paint when I arrived — were carefully revealed and incorporated into a sequence of planters filled with aromatic herbs, wrapping the terrace like a living cocoon.

The pivoting door creates a subtle reflection between the terrace and the interior, blurring the boundary between the two. As it opens and closes, it shifts the perception of the space, becoming part of the project’s play with movement, perspective, and continuity.

Inside, the project is woven together. The white tile emblematic of the laboratory is reinterpreted through handcrafted beldi zellige. Its 10 × 10 format becomes a unit, a thread, a grid, as the square takes shape across raw materials — ceramic, wood, oxidized metal, cement — interlacing together and with the existing architecture.
The 10 × 10 grid became the underlying language of the project, guiding its proportions, spaces, and circulation, with the plan and elevations all perfectly fitting within the same system.

From this, a spatial carpet takes shape — an inhabitable landscape conceived as a human-scale sculpture.
The space becomes both the artwork itself and the place in which it is set and experienced.

By me, for me, with love and gratitude 🤍
