📍 Tribeca

This is the final week to view Asher Liftin's (@asherliftin) new paintings and drawings—which draw from his own photographs—in "Recent Work" at #125Newbury.

“The paintings come together and fragment as you move through the room. The drawings pull you up close,” Liftin told "Surface" (@surfacemag). “So much of what is created today is about the transmission of information, and the information as the image in the paintings is just where they begin. The gap between the photograph and the final painting is where all the magic of painting is.”

See "Recent Work" at our gallery in Tribeca through this Saturday, November 7.

$Asher Liftin's (@asherliftin) solo exhibition "Recent Work," featuring new paintings and works on paper, is on view at #125Newbury through November 7. In the gallery's 125 Free Press publication, Arne Glimcher writes: "Closer observation reveals the remarkable way [Liftin] constructs an image, how he builds it like Seurat, from iterations of incremental lines woven together. In transparent hues of red, yellow, blue, and black, interwoven lines come together perceptually to form the image. But they also fracture and unwind at the edges of the picture, or drip down from their place in the midst of it, dissolving the grid and testifying to the handmade nature of the object. When the lines break, light streams in, turning background into foreground and reversing the picture plane’s logic." This November at #125Newbury, "Rothko/Gottlieb: The Surrealist Years" will bring together paintings and works on paper from 1941 to 1951, a pivotal decade in which both Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb broke from Realist figuration and forged a new language of Surrealist abstraction.

The sequel exhibition to "Gottlieb/Rothko: The Realist Years," presented in 2025, "The Surrealist Years" returns to a moment when the familiar world had become strange, when painting was searching for a new language to grapple with the reshaping of reality in the wake of war.

In his new paintings and drawings on view in "Recent Work," Asher Liftin (@asherliftin) overlays successive lines of ink into grids before breaking them down into multicolored dots, producing shifts in value across the surface.

The resulting works sit on the border between the human and the mechanical—the dots and lines dripping and trembling, revealing the organic hand that made them. "Liftin has discovered a totally new way to find beauty with realism," writes Arne Glimcher in the gallery's 125 Free Press publication. "The magnetic is in the method."

Encounter evocative new paintings by Asher Liftin (@asherliftin) in our Tribeca space this Friday evening, when our gallery will remain open from 6 to 8 PM for Downtown Gallery Night's After Hours.

In an alchemical yet deeply methodical process, Liftin works from reference photographs to decompose them into their constituent colors, dividing them into four hues—cyan, yellow, magenta, and black—in much the same way a modern color printer produces the full spectrum of visible chroma.

Discover new paintings and drawings by Asher Liftin (@asherliftin) in "Recent Work," opening tonight at #125Newbury in Tribeca.

Navigating a continuous cycle of resolve and dissolve, which changes according to the viewer’s physical relationship to the picture plane, Liftin’s meticulously hand-crafted works are simultaneously realist depictions and maps of our own cognition.

Following Liftin’s Summer 2026 Artist Residency at The Watermill Center (@watermillcenter) in Watermill, New York, "Recent Work" is curated by Arne Glimcher and accompanied by a written introduction by Glimcher in the gallery’s 125 Free Press publication.
