2026.10.31.11.01 11.01 Blackening Rate Inspection Day 60 since sowing. I selected two plants from each field, trying my best to keep the selection random and objective, without letting emotions or personal bias influence my choices. A total of 10 plants were cut and then threshed by hand. The results: 80% of the grains had turned black. Based on the blackening rate alone, it’s already time to harvest. Even allowing for some randomness in the selection, this is an unusually high figure. Looking at the cut stems of all 10 plants, their sizes and thicknesses were remarkably varied. So, I think I managed to get a fairly random sample after all! What’s more, although the plants are shorter than in previous years, each one has produced over 100 grains — the highest yield we've ever had. There are still two weeks until the scheduled harvest date, which I set 15 days ago. For now, all I can do is hope the grains don't start falling off. But I also need to consider the worst-case scenario of having to bring the harvest forward. I can't harvest before juu-go opens because of the morning dew. And once business is over, it's already dark... Even in my seventh year, something unexpected happens almost every year. I need to think a little more deeply about what might be causing this. by @15_soba
2026.10.28 The buckwheat in Plot 500 was cut with a flail mower on August 22, and the field was tilled on August 25. The buckwheat that grew from there was all volunteer growth. The field was originally scheduled for sowing on August 31, but it never dried out enough, so we couldn’t sow the seeds. And yet, this buckwheat grew on, undeterred by the rain and standing water. About 80–90% of the seeds have turned black and matured beautifully. It’s my seventh year, and I’m still learning through trial and error every season. But once again, I’ve realized that from next year onward, I should start preparing the fields sometime after August 15! This buckwheat grew from the buckwheat hulls scattered around the compost pile. The buckwheat sown on September 2. It is utterly free-spirited and straightforward… One surviving plant from my seedling experiment. I’ll move it into the greenhouse. Preparing and inspecting the farm machinery for harvesting and cutting. I couldn’t do any of this alone! Thank you, everyone, for your help and support. Top-dressing the compost with additional fertilizer. by @15_soba
2026.10.21.23.25 At this time of year, the leaves show a variety of colors. Each plant, each branch, each cluster, each flower — every single one grows freely, in its own time. Beside the buckwheat that has already turned black, other flowers are still blooming. Forty days since sowing. Around five days after full bloom, the plants have stopped growing taller. The rate of blackening has also increased rapidly. From here, the seeds will gradually ripen, one after another. The tops of the spicy daikon radishes are beginning to emerge, too. Another long stretch of rain clouds is coming tomorrow. Hang in there. Top-dressing the compost. by @15_soba
2026.10.17 Day 46 since sowing. It’s been over 10 days since full bloom, and the flowering period is almost over. Some seeds are beginning to swell as the ovaries develop, while others are slowly starting to firm up. There are fewer bees around today, even though the weather is sunny. Have they already taken all the nectar…? There’s always something to worry about… Our teacher came out to the field to guide us through the next stage of seedling cultivation. And today, we had a taste test of buckwheat tea for juu-go farm! by @15_soba
2026.10.15 Ten days after full bloom. The flowers have mostly turned into ovaries now. They are still so sparse inside that the morning sunlight shines right through them. I've also decided on the harvest date and business days for the usual risky November harvest. Now all I can do is trust that the seeds will fill out and mature to a dark color. On September 19, I moved them from the field to the garage and stopped watering them. Seventeen days later, they still haven't withered. What incredible vitality! Of the four plants of each of the two varieties, one of each will go into the greenhouse, and the other two of each will be returned to the field. A few plants in the selection plot are also growing well, approaching 60 cm in height. Thinned out ten varieties of spicy daikon radishes. Top-dressed with compost. by @15_soba
2026.10.11.12 The buckwheat remains in full bloom, while the flowers gradually begin to develop into fruit. Branching varies depending on the field and location, but even in fields where the seeding density was relatively high, growth appears to be progressing well, perhaps because we sowed less seed than in previous years. Checked experimental plot No. 499. Thinned the ten varieties of spicy daikon radish. Prepared whole and split buckwheat grains for juu-go farm’s buckwheat tea. Since some husks inevitably remain mixed in, I removed them by hand with tweezers. From sorting and hulling to the final product, it took about an hour and a half to process approximately 2 kg. We are now at peak flowering, and the weather has remained clear for a while. May the buckwheat continue to bloom a little longer. Checked all seven plots. by @15_soba
2026.10.10 In full bloom. 37 days since sowing. The average height of the ten buckwheat plants selected from each field has exceeded 80 cm. Still, they seem a little shorter than in previous years. From here on, the morning dew alone should be enough. At sunrise, there are still very few bees around. But after spending about an hour walking through the fields, the air warms slightly, and suddenly the bees begin to stir and grow active. Beside the drainage channel in Field No. 469, the buckwheat has grown so thick over a five-meter stretch that the ditch is no longer visible. Nature is honest. In the experimental plot No. 499, the spicy radishes are also doing their best, pushing through soil hardened like pottery. A little more compost for top dressing. by @15_soba
2026.10.08 ①–④ No. 450 — the difference between areas where the chicken manure had an effect and areas that grew without it, with little fertility in the soil. Every year I tell myself this is an issue I need to work on, and especially this year I was determined to tackle it. But the results are what they are because of my careless way of spreading the chicken manure on August 23. I went all the way to a poultry farm to pick up their fermented chicken manure, only to end up with this. The larger the fields become, the harder it is to rely solely on the soil’s natural fertility. I’m still challenging myself to see just how far I can take this. ⑤ Part of No. 451 was so muddy that the tractor itself got stuck. Once again, buckwheat is not as tolerant of water as I would like it to be. It grows with complete, almost brutally honest, straightforwardness. ⑥–⑦ S1 selected from the experimental plot, now in bloom. ⑧–⑨ The individual characteristics of the ten varieties of spicy daikon are gradually becoming clearer. ⑩– Around the time of full bloom and just before and after, I become especially conscious of the bees and butterflies. I find myself wanting to confirm their presence with both my eyes and ears. Every year around this time, I feel like I want to become a bee. At this time of year, the surrounding rice fields are empty, while my own fields are the only ones still in bloom. It makes me feel a little proud. From May through August, it’s the opposite. I want to find something to make bloom during that time of year, too. by @15_soba
2026.10.04.05.06 10.06 In Full Bloom. Day 34 Since Sowing. Year 7. Since the second year, I’ve been saving my own seeds. This is the sixth generation. In the first year, I couldn’t even harvest enough buckwheat to save seeds for the following year. Those were the days. It brings back memories. I’ve never had a year filled with so much worry as this one. It has rained almost constantly, with very little sunshine, and things have turned out far from what I had planned. And yet, right on schedule, the buckwheat has reached full bloom at almost exactly the same time as in previous years. The plants are a little shorter, and the differences between fields are quite noticeable. All I can do now is hope that the rain stays away, and that bees and butterflies can fly freely and in abundance among the flowers. There is still plenty to worry about. Between showers, I mowed fields No. 499 and 500. The fourth round is now complete. Thinned the spicy daikon radishes. A field lunch while enjoying the flowers. Please, no typhoons! by @15_soba
