“When we saw the pines we knew. This was the place”. They chose their venue with feeling, and after a day of immersing myself in their world I quickly realized this was a pattern for Katy and Robby. If she could she would adopt every stray animal she found and he would learn how to build chicken coops if she asked. His twin brother could’ve gone on for hours on Robby’s relentless work ethic and loyalty to those he loves. Katy’s best friend told me “there really is no one like her.” She hugs hard, talks with her hands and when she looks at you? You feel seen. Their families were animated, warm and had enough stories to last weeks around a campfire. The type of people you’d want to open up a bottle of wine with and pour over childhood photo albums (did you know Robby spent some of his childhood living on a sailboat?). An entire table was filled with regulars from the bar they met at in 2021, including the man who married them. After dinner coworkers drifted out back and I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. Restaurant kids? We’re are all the same; all we need is a liminal space for great conversation and a quick beer. That’s where relationships are made. They chose their venue with feeling because they built their world with heart. What a joy it was to bear witness to it all. • VENUE: @pinewood.mn PLANNER: Lindsey with @mavenevents PHOTOGRAPHY: @_alimiller assisted by @_alicarroll FLORIST: @cambridgefloralmn CATERING: @donatellisrestaurant RENTALS: @able.rental BAR: @4liquidmotion DJ: @adagioentertainment HAIR + MAKEUP: @taylormariebeautyllc DRESS: @saintbridal SUIT: @calvinklein by @_alimiller
Welcome back to Ali Miller Photography. I want to say thank you to a few extremely important humans— without them this new chapter would have remained in the archives. @gigimorrr — the woman who drew every drawing, orchestrated colors, discovered every font and crafted each logo; I am in awe of your brain. You have an innate ability to take scattered, two dimensional ideas and turn them into moods and feelings and familiar landscapes. It is an honor to be your client, partner and friend. @bytomw — “thank you” will never be enough. Hours and hours of zoom calls, gut punch questions, introductions to brilliant artists. You changed how I compose the world, how I see color, how I view my work and radicalized my goals. My loved ones know you as my mentor, “that one British guy”, the human who got me into Japanese magazines. To me you are all of those roles, but most of all you’re my friend. Thank you. & to Duck— you kept me out of Cedar Rapids and continue to give us the most marvelous life. I love you. I love you. I love you. by @_alimiller
I have needed new “branding photos” for a while now. I thought about going the safe route— renting a studio, putting on makeup and an artsy black blazer. “Hi I’m Ali, I’m a wedding photographer”. But I kept thinking about the one thing I say to every client I’ve ever worked with, “All I ask is that you trust me” A request that, at surface level, seems simple enough. Then you break it down and it’s…a monumental ask. To do what I do, document people’s weddings and life’s milestones, strangers have to let me, a stranger, in. Into their homes so we can sit cross legged on the floor. Into their dressing rooms where I button up a white dress if mom forgot her readers. Into their relationships; the steadfast, the complicated, the forever. Into their insecurities and their anxieties…. I ask a lot of you. Yet, you let me in. We are able to traverse that space we created together, a pocket of vulnerability & trust. That’s where the magic happens…I become a part of your world, you become a part of mine. Thats why I couldn’t show up on here in business casual, laughing against a white brick wall. There’s no trust in that introduction, at least not to me. “All I ask is that you trust me”. Hi. I’m Ali. I’m a photographer. Let’s sit cross legged on the floor together & drink wine. I trust you. Come on in. • Developing + scans: @boutiquefilmlab All photos are 35 mm film, taken on a tripod with a self timer. A truly breathtaking weekend spent with a remarkable group of people. Alice + Zack put heart into every single detail of their wedding and an absolute dream team of artists brought it all to life. Fireworks, dirty martinis, alligator tears, bear hugs. A wedding that was equal parts awe & vulnerability, grace & energy. Cheers to you, Alice + Zack 🤍🫒 • Wedding Planner:   @mkyourdreamday Venue:  @glenmanorhouse Catering: @russellmorincatering Photographer:  @_alimiller Second Photographer: @lisagilbertphotography Videographer + Drone:   @artisticweddingfilms Hair & Makeup:  @ali_lomazzo_beauty Ceremony Music: @arreauxstrings Cocktail Hour Music: @jahnaroseviolin DJ:  @grooveevents @djmatttoto Sax: @grooveevents Florist:  @sarahsfloral Transportation:  @rockstar_limo Vintage Car: @elizabeth_in_newport Rentals:  @peakeventservices Stationery: @cartaliastudio Photo Booth:  @nephotobooth Floral Preservation:  @ej.artistry Dress: @thebridalstudioutah by @_alimiller
The duality of a woman. Nobody ever believes Campbell when she says she can toothcrack a shot gun. Now she has proof on 35mm film, which feels extremely important. @pabstblueribbon is the official beer of the bride (decided by me thank you so much) • Venue: Nine Hearths Estate Film Scan: @boutiquefilmlab Dress: @pronovias Hair: @hairbyerinbutterfield Makeup: @morganwildermua Ring: @emilychelseajewelry by @_alimiller
Leading her through a sea of loved ones, drinks in hand, the joy was palpable. The first thing Zack said after he saw this photo? “How beautiful is Alice?” Followed by “we look so cool” He’s not wrong. • Alice & Zack, the night before their wedding in Newport. • Planner: @mkyourdreamday Rehearsal Venue: @vanderbiltauberge Dress: @alexandragrecco Suit: @suitmenofficial by @_alimiller
“Wanna hear something really cool? I get to marry my best friend today”. They got ready together in their apartment an hour before we had to leave. Kendra dyed her veil the night before with tea bags and Caleb’s forehead was temporarily a deep shade of red because he forgot to put salve on before the bleach. Their dog sat on the bed begging for treats while incense smoke billowed softly through the studio— just like any other morning. Kendra and Caleb feel like nostalgia; not in an old timey or vintage way but in a “I swear you remind me of my childhood best friend” type of way. They’re comfort, they hold emotions securely, they make complicated situations feel simple and god do they have so much freaking fun together. Their wedding day was just that— comfortable, emotional, simple, and holy shit was it fun. We rolled up to the Rhinestone Wedding Chapel and were greeted by Elvis. He absolutely crushed the ceremony. We ate pizza at @diceyspizzatavern . The whole day was shot on film and a point and shoot. It was just…perfect. The whole damn day. Perfect. • I love you my friends. Thank you for letting me play a small role in your wedding day. Film develop + scans by @boutiquefilmlab by @_alimiller
She walked in the room where the photoshoot was happening, took a look around and asked, “Where’s the set up? Lights and backdrops and what not?” I stood there, absolutely gobsmacked for a moment before I realized SHE was talking to ME. “Oh yes, hi Dolly, uh it’s me. Im Ali. I’m the whole set up actually”, nervously gesturing at my outdated camera and single lens. She strolled over, gave me a squeeze on the shoulder and a wink, “Well alright then honey, Miss Ali. Let’s get started”. She was more than an icon, more than a legend. She was more than words could ever express. Rest easy Dolly, meeting you was the honor of my life🦋 • 2021 photos for @brentwood_lifestyle by @_alimiller
We were told to want an epic life. Adventurous job. Sprawling home. Michelin star dinners. Movie meet cute. Flowers every Wednesday. 6 figure wedding. Jaw dropping. Breathtaking. Once in a lifetime. Epic. I don’t think an “epic life” means what we were told it means. Epic isn’t actually found in grand gestures or excess. “Epic” lives in the small stuff; the mundane parts of our world that prove love exists. It’s epic the bartender knows to keep the tab open. It’s epic splitting the G on the first try. It’s epic that his hand always finds its way into yours. It’s epic the fridge is covered in Polaroids that wouldn’t exist if you hadn’t met. We were told to want an epic life; how extraordinary it is to realize you’ve already got one. • Tremendous thank you to Jess and Alonso for showing me their world, I love you both dearly 🤍 by @_alimiller
