12:51 - The Strokes

Another Strokes cover because I’m pumped to catch them on tour! This song grew on me over all these years. For a long time, I was convinced that they had a synthesizer on this song, but it is really just a guitar with the tone knob rolled all the way off!

Under Cover of Darkness by The Strokes

I was recently teaching this one in one of my lessons and I forgot how awesome this song was! The Strokes always have guitar parts that work really well together.

Exercise of the Week 52

ONE YEAR OF EXERCISE OF THE WEEK!!

For this week, I wanted to take a look at tap bends. The idea is that all the bending is already done with your left hand, so you don’t need to actually put in the effort to bend with your right. If you bend in tune with your left hand, it should still be perfectly in tune when you tap your right hand. I also sprinkled in some fun triplet/sextuplet rhythms in the middle. Start slow and really make sure everything is in tune!

Also, I will be retiring Exercise of the Week until further notice. Thank you so much for your support throughout! Plz keep following for other guitar related stuff.

Exercise of the Week 51

This week, I wanted to look at arpeggiated add9 chords. These are fairly common in a lot of modern emo/metalcore music, but they’ve been staples for a long time (see ‘Message in a Bottle’ by The Police). Make sure you are able to alternate pick this, as it will help a lot with keeping it in time. Also, make sure the slides are ringing out the whole time!

Exercise of the Week 50

This week, I thought I’d do a fun Randy Rhodes style tapping exercise! One of the biggest hurdles I was noticing was mitigating unwanted string noise. I ended up using the side of my palm to help mitigate this, as well as my forearm the further I went down the fretboard. Definitely start slow. Potentially try doing this at three notes-per-beat to start.

Exercise of the Week 49

Everyone always practices pentatonic shapes vertically, but this usually traps you into small spots along the neck. Being able to freely play across the neck means being familiar with the pentatonic scale in as many ways as possible. This one forces you to know it in 5 groups of four notes. When you get these down, see if you can do it between the B and G strings, and so on!

Exercise of the Week 48

This week, I wanted to focus on controlled, almost tremolo style sextuplets. You aren’t just doing a fast burst of notes like you would for tremolo picking. You are trying to get 6 notes for every beat. Some things I do to help with this is emphasize the start of every beat. You can sort of see this in my right hand. The other thing you can do is get a super minimal pick depth, almost barely touching the strings. This will enable you to go much quicker and be much more controlled. As always, start slow!

Exercise of the Week 47

For some reason, I’ve always found these motions hard to lock in, especially the descending ones. It really requires consistency in your right hand, and proper coordination in the left. As I always say, start slow! Very little pick depth is ideal.
