Gaa is thrilled to announce a solo presentation of new works by Johanna Seidel at Frieze Seoul. Rooted in an ongoing interest in duality and transformation, Seidel’s work explores the tension between lived experience and imagined realities, using metamorphosis as both subject and narrative device. Seidel’s paintings emerge from her interest in perceived realities, where symbols from history, mythology, dreams, and everyday life intermingle. We look forward to welcoming you to our booth in the Focus Section. The fair opens with a VIP Preview on Wednesday, September 2 and remains open to visitors through September 5, 2026. Please email info@gaa-gallery.com for more information Artwork: Johanna Seidel, Against the shore, 2026 Oil on canvas 39 3/8 x 51 1/8 in | 100 x 130 cm #johannaseidel #gaa #friezeseoul by @_johannaseidel

Herzliche Einladung zu Eröffnung und Kunstgespräch mit Johanna Seidel im Projektraum »Neue Galerie« der Städtischen Galerie Dresden! 📌Do / 10. Sep 19:00 Sitting on a Fence – Johanna Seidel. 📸© Dominique Hille #städtischegaleriedresden #dresden #dresdencontemporaryart by @_johannaseidel
Thank you to Artsy and Hayoung Chung for featuring our solo presentation of Johanna Seidel as one of Frieze Seoul’s best booths! “At a corner of the fair’s Focus section, visitors to Gaa Gallery’s booth were welcomed by the gallerist—and his eight-month-old son, watching from a stroller. It was a fittingly personal introduction to the pastoral yet slightly surreal paintings of Dresden-based German artist Johanna Seidel. With spaces in Cologne and New York, the gallery is making its Frieze Seoul debut in the section for galleries founded since 2014. This is also Seidel’s first presentation in Korea, following a strong response at Art Basel Hong Kong earlier this year. Her scenes initially appear familiar: Figures occupy bedrooms and domestic interiors, while animals, plants, and celestial forms hover nearby. Look longer, and they drift somewhere between everyday life and dreams. Siennas, violets, and murky greens give the oil paintings an unexpectedly soft, almost porous quality. Most are modest enough to fit above a bed. Jewel Thief (2026), a portrait of a woman holding a cigar on a tall, narrow canvas, is priced at €3,000 ($3,478). While I was there, a collector who had purchased another small painting was already asking whether they could take it home that day.” #friezeseoul #johannaseidel #gaagallery by @_johannaseidel
OPENING TODAY - Gaa is thrilled to present new oil paintings by Dresden-based artist Johanna Seidel for its first Frieze Seoul participation. Find us at booth F1 in the Focus sector ✨ A restrained yet luminous palette anchors the series: transparent sky blue, pale pink, gold-green, and earthy oranges evoke the sensory overload of late spring and early summer. Within this heightened atmosphere, Seidel turns her attention to female desire and its modes of representation. Mundane objects become narratively charged; fragments from near and distant histories merge with the fairy-tale-like; and culturally embedded stories are invoked only to be fractured at crucial moments, allowing for a renewed, contemporary storytelling. Seidel’s practice has long been concerned with the nature of perceived realities, weaving symbols from mythology, dreams, and daily life into poetic, atmospheric canvases. Trained at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (MFA), she has exhibited widely across Europe and the United States, including recent solo shows at CLC Gallery Venture (Beijing), Galerie Laetitia Gorsy (Leipzig), and Gaa (New York, Cologne) and solo presentations at Liste Art Fair (Basel) and Frieze Seoul (Seoul). For the Focus sector of Frieze Seoul 2026, Gaa Gallery is pleased to present a solo presentation of new paintings by Johanna Seidel (b. 1993, Dresden). In her latest body of work, Seidel explores the tension between freedom and foreboding that defines the height of summer. Drawing on the atmospheric intensity of heatwaves—their hallucinatory shimmer and the paradox of drought-stricken grasses as early as June—she constructs a visual language that oscillates between naive and realist figuration, between drawing and painting. #comingsoon - We are very delighted to announce ‘Sitting on a Fence’, a solo exhibition by Johanna Seidel at Städtische Galerie Dresden. @galeriedresden @_johannaseidel Johanna Seidel is another graduate of the HfBK Dresden. Born in Sebnitz in 1993, the artist studied there under Peter Bömmels and Anton Henning. For her dreamy and suggestive portraits of modern female figures, the artist has developed her very own painterly signature. A delight in the opulently ornamental, sometimes a flirtation with the naïve, as well as quotations and allusions from art history are juxtaposed with a mix of cool and casually staged everyday scenes and sometimes enigmatic symbolism. @hfbk_dresden 11 September 2026 - 10 January 2027 Städtische Galerie Dresden Projektraum Neue Galerie Johanna Seidel Selfportrait as a Painter, 2025 Oil on canvas 175 × 135 cm Courtesy of the artist and Galerie Laetitia Gorsy Photo: © Dominique Hille More information via @galeriedresden. #JohannaSeidel #SittingOnAFence #StädtischeGalerieDresden #institutionalexhibition by @_johannaseidel
