Showing off my latest hobby that’s actually an obsession :)

As I continue to pursue this hobby more and more, I couldn’t turn off my social work brain. I just had to search up origins of specialty coffee and observe how “white” the coffee culture is. I couldn’t just be happy dialing shots with terrible latte art. In this ongoing journey , I learned these three things:

1. Maybe obvious to whoever is willing to read this- Coffee growth/brewed was originally from Africa and Middle East (Mainly, Ethiopia and Kenya). I associated coffee with just Europe. But to my surprise, only thing that was done there was Italy inventing Espresso. Coffee beans only became acceptable for “white”/European folks in the 1600s after a Pope baptized to make it “pure”. Cultural appropriation mainstreamed coffee.

2. The complications of Fair Trade vs. Direct Trade- Coffee is grown in very specific conditions. Hot climate and mainly around the Equator. The people who are growing the crops are Black, Latino, and other minorities that’s not white. They tend to land in harsh conditions and have to keep up the huge demand from North American and European countries. In summary, Fair Trade and Direct trade aren’t a stamp moral coffee sources.

3. Lastly, Climate Change. Just to be blunt, Coffee might disappear or be for the rich in 27-50 years. The Land used for hyper consumption hasn’t been taken cared of due to the high demand and then with global heating.

With all that learned, I made some adjustments to my habits. I buy beans from local roasters because they are roast the beans at the shop, which means the laborers doing way less tasks and it cuts a lot of the importing like shipping individual packed beans. Also, I try my best to stay away from super mainstream coffee shops like St@rbucks(also those places aren’t that tasty)☠️

I linked down some easy links and podcast for those interested. If y’all even got here😭😭😭

Time to be perceived again by @_radrama

This piece really connected me to my dad, Baba. My Baba used to be a fisherman and would tell me stories of his fishing adventures. People used to call him Sorka, Sorka means fisherman in Zarma. Before leaving Niger, Baba decided to continue to go by Sorka. Baba the Fisherman.

Showed it to Baba and he loved it!
