🇬🇧/🇮🇹 Shhh/Peaceful becomes a cassette label. The first release (even though the catalog number says 002, after all we like jazz) is the debut album by the Palermo-based collective Lero Lero. At the core of their research lies the Sicilian Sound Archive of the 20th century. The melodies it contains—remnants of a magical world almost entirely lost—are revived by Lero Lero with a critical spirit and contemporary sensitivity.  The amazing photo is by @giuliaparlato , while the artwork is by @franzlonghi , and the stunning cassette design (which will become a proper series for future S/P releases) is by @dgrpno. Cssette can be pre-ordered at Shhh/Peaceful’s or Lero Lero’s bandcamp pages. Read more about this masterpiece and why Shhh/Peaceful choose the cassette format on Substack, link in bio together with the Bandcamp one! Some records don’t need a particular time, place or state of mind. They simply find their way into your life and make themselves at home. That’s something of what happens with Tulei, the self-titled debut by Andrea “Jimmy” Catagnoli and Davide Domenichini, out on the ever-inspiring Black Sweat Records. Born out of three years of shared ideas, spontaneous encounters and collective improvisation, the album brings together six compositions that move freely between spiritual jazz, improvisation and deeply personal melodic explorations. I asked Jimmy to take us through the record, one track at a time, opening up the stories, references and intuitions behind its making. Put the record on and follow us into Tulei’s world. Full track-by-track on Shhh/Peaceful’s substack. Read and subscribeLink in bio. by @_shhh_peaceful_
TULEI IS OUT NOW ON VINYL AND DIGITAL Tulei is a project born in Milan out of the friendship and collaboration between saxophonist Andrea “Jimmy” Catagnoli and Davide Domenichini of Al Doum & The Faryds. The album features a distinct spiritual jazz sound in which the saxophone takes center stage, but without sinking into the roots of the more canonical free jazz approach of legends like Archie Schepp, Alice Coltrane, or Pharoah Sanders. Rather, the sound draws on more personal, elegiac and minimalist atmospheres, often with a visual and cinematic flair. Light sax loops suggest delicate aquatic movements, soft and ethereal impressionistic touches, subtle whirlpools of emotion that fade into the post-twilight darkness. The saxophone is the breath of solitary nights, lyrical and dramatic moments, requiems, or subdued fanfares that expand into a single universal whisper. A deeply meditative and solemn progression evokes 1970s South African jazz and certain structures more akin to free improvisation. The image of coral on the cover suggests the totality of this pervasive impressionistic tone, a slow movement through sound, a gradual immersion into dreams and visions. The full session is finally online! Shhh/Peaceful’s exclusive listening session with Scottie McNiece, co-founder and spiritual guiding force behind International Anthem, is now available in full on YouTube and Mixcloud. Recorded at (and produced by) Rome’s Studio 33, this was a truly special encounter: Scottie retraced the history of one of contemporary music’s most vital labels, shared the thinking behind its curatorial choices, and played records from the artists that helped shaped its identity. From the label’s origins to a moving tribute to jaime branch, this is a chance to get closer to the ideas and sounds behind the International Anthem universe. A big thank you to Scottie and the whole Studio 33 crewì. 🎥 Watch the full session on YouTube, link in the stories and bio!

Beirut-based producer, engineer and songwriter Joy Moughanni explores experimental electronics, sound art and spatial listening. His acclaimed debut album, “A Separation From Habit”, released on the cult label Ruptured Records, explores the relationship between sound, perception and personal and political manipulation. From South Lebanon, 3Li3bboud blends sampling, trap, boom bap and jazz, drawing on the sounds and experiences of the post-war South.  He has produced for hip-hop legend El Rass, while his albums “Things You Don’t See in the South” and “Ya Allah”, explore place, memory and contemporary life through a deeply sample-driven approach to beatmaking. Lebanon has a long and vibrant history of experimental music. In today’s landscape of war and instability, music becomes an even more powerful tool to make oneself heard, create connections and resist isolation. Starting from early in the afternoon (3:30 PM) we’ll talk about all of this with the artists and @giulio.pecci in a dedicated conversation before the live performances. What happens when we listen to a place where almost nothing seems to be happening? For KMRU, the answer is: a lot. The Nairobi-born, Berlin-based artist has built his practice around deep listening, field recording and the subtle sounds that usually escape our attention. For “Near Silence,” a new audiovisual project produced and curated by ALMARE, he travelled to Liguria’s Beigua Natural Park alongside Kenyan filmmaker Fred Odede, immersing themselves in one of Italy’s so-called quiet areas — places where anthropogenic noise is reduced to a minimum. The result is a work about sound, silence, ecosystems and the relationship between the human and the more-than-human world. That now comes to Turin. On Saturday 26 September, KMRU will activate “Near Silence” at Turin’s Orto Botanico as part of the second edition of Spellbound, the distributed festival conceived by ALMARE. The night will also feature live performances ( at Magazzino del Po) by Sealionwoman and Takkak Takkak, with DJ sets by Jokkoo and Pho Bo Collective. @giulio.pecci ph by Luca Vianello e Silvia Mangosio by @_shhh_peaceful_

I went to see Hermanos Gutiérrez and came out thinking about The White Stripes, AI, class, algorithms. Hermanos Gutiérrez are the perfect product of our time: immaculate sound, immaculate image, immaculate audience. Two Swiss brothers with an Ecuadorian mother making a highly polished version of “Latin” desert rock, surrounded by an aesthetic that often seems more important than the music itself. The problem is what their success represents. A world in which music can be reduced to a recognisable aesthetic, a mood, a lifestyle — something that looks right on Instagram and sounds right in a trendy cocktail bar. It made me think about what has disappeared from music: working- and middle-class voices, weirdness, mistakes, experimentation, anger. Then I went home and watched The White Stripes’ Under Blackpool Lights. Jack White was a fucking upholsterer. And somehow that says everything. This is not rage bait. This is a think piece on what happens when music stops being dangerous. by @_shhh_peaceful_
On September 10, Flaming Creatures and Shhh/Peaceful open the new season with a double live set by Chris Ryan Williams and Kalia Vandever, two of the most original voices in New York’s experimental music scene. Trumpeter, composer, and a central figure in Brooklyn’s underground music community, Chris Ryan Williams creates music in which improvisation, electronics, and ambient converge in slow-moving, constantly shifting forms. A collaborator of artists including Bennie Maupin, Nicole Mitchell, Ras G, and Matana Roberts, Williams will present material from Odu: Vibration II, his new work for AKP Recordings: a landscape of horns, synthesizers, resonances, and layered sound, suspended between contemplation and bursts of dissonance. Grammy Award-winning trombonist and composer Kalia Vandever brings their solo universe to Rome, developed alongside their quartet work and collaborations with Shabaka Hutchings, Arooj Aftab, DARKSIDE, Joel Ross, and Immanuel Wilkins. On their new album Mana, released in June by International Anthem, the trombone moves through reverb, pitch shifting, and live electronics, meeting piano and voice in music that is intimate, spacious, and rarefied. For this occasion, we chose Studio Miriam, one of the largest recording studios in Rome: a space designed for listening, with controlled acoustics capable of revealing every detail, resonance, and shift in dynamics. It is an especially fitting environment for the music of Williams and Vandever, both of whom explore the physical relationship between sound, space, and listening. And one far from insignificant detail in Rome in September: the room is air-conditioned. September 10, 2026 7:30 PM sharp Studio Miriam – Via Ponzio Cominio 101, Rome Air-conditioned venue Spots are limited. The event is reserved for members of the cultural association. A membership contribution is required to support the event. LINK IN BIO #flamingcreaturesroma #shhhpeaceful #chrisryanwilliams #kaliavandever by @_shhh_peaceful_
What happens when one of the most exciting labels in contemporary experimental music lands in the middle of the Italian flatlands? For two days in July, Precenicco — a tiny town somewhere between Pordenone, the Veneto and the lagoon — became the unlikely home of the first Italian showcase dedicated to International Anthem. Six artists. Two days. A lot of rain, prosecco, mosquitoes, flamingos and some of the most adventurous music around. Ben LaMar Gay, Alabaster DePlume, Kalia Vandever, Gregory Uhlmann, Ruth Goller and Ibellisse Guardia Ferragutti — plus the strange, beautiful feeling of being completely out of place. A season in review. What started as a newsletter has grown into something much bigger: a curatorial project, a series of events, and a tape label. Over the past months, Shhh/Peaceful has travelled from Rome across Italy, bringing together musicians, artists, labels, spaces and communities. From Aquiles Navarro to Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer, Daniyal Ahmed, Sabine Salame, Nate Mercereau, Jonah Parzen-Johnson & Lau Nau, Lero Lero, Nicolò Porcelluzzi, Scottie McNiece and many more. More than ten events. A lot of music. Even more people. Some beautiful collaborations, unexpected encounters, successes, setbacks and, most importantly, friendships. I’ve written a few words about this first season — what it meant to build it, what I learned from it, and what comes next. The full piece is now out on the newsletter.
