Before we spend two days working with Vasantha Yogananthan (@vyogananthan) at Sugar Paper, we’re spending a little time with his work. A Myth of Two Souls takes up quite a bit of shelf space. Seven books, published between 2016 and 2021, and years of returning to a story to find another way of telling it. Published by Chose Commune (@chose_commune), with editorial and graphic design by Kummer & Herrman (@lmnop.works), the seven books explore how a story takes shape through the images, their sequence and the pages themselves. Beginning in 2013, Vasantha travelled through India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, developing his own interpretation of the Ramayana. People he met became characters from the epic. Photographs were staged, painted by hand or combined with illustrations. Collaborations brought other artists’ imaginations into the work. We’re drawn to the time behind these books: the repeated journeys, the experiments, the decisions that gradually gave the project its form. And to the thought that you can begin something without knowing exactly what it will become. On 21–22 November, Vasantha will lead "De/constructing your Story" at Sugar Paper. We’ll look closely at his work, then spend time with yours: editing photographs, trying sequences and making a small book dummy. Bring a project you’re still figuring out. 🗓 21–22 November 2026 · 10 am–6 pm 📍 Sugar Paper · Modena Up to 12 participants · Workshop in English €250 until 31 October, then €300. Lunch included both days. Sign up by 10 November. Programme, membership details and registration via the link in bio. Questions about the work you’d like to bring? Write to us. by @_sugarpaper_
Mom, we're going to @parisphotofair! This year, we’re joining @fotodok.nl’s programme around the fair for the first time. Thanks to @femdelabem for inviting us to bring “Blind Date with a Photobook” to Paris. A wrapped book, a few clues, and a conversation waiting to happen. Pick a book without seeing its cover, unwrap it with a small group, and discover what’s inside together. Join us at @atelier_neerlandais on 12 November, 11:30–13:30, as part of the programme for A Wider Gaze. Free entry, booking required. Reserve your spot on Eventbrite → link in bio. by @_sugarpaper_
On 21–22 November, Vasantha Yogananthan (@vyogananthan) joins us at Sugar Paper for De/constructing your Story, a two-day workshop on editing and sequencing. We’ll look through photobooks, spend time with his work and take a fresh look at yours. There’ll be room to try another beginning, question a favourite image and see what happens when someone else looks at the sequence you’ve been staring at for weeks. Bring prints of a project in progress. We’ll work towards a small book dummy. 🗓 21–22 November 2026 · 10 am–6 pm 📍 Sugar Paper · Via Cassiani 188/A, Modena Up to 12 participants · In English €250 until 31 October, then €300. Lunch, water and coffee included both days. Registration closes on 10 November. ↗ Programme and registration via the link in bio. Wondering whether your project would fit? Drop us a message. by @_sugarpaper_
Il 20 novembre ospitiamo Vasantha Yogananthan (@vyogananthan) da Sugar Paper per un nuovo Little Talks: The Medium of Time.
📸→ 20 novembre · Sugar Paper · ore 19 The Medium of Time: Vasantha Yogananthan (@vyogananthan) in dialogo con il Dott. Some projects reach a point where they stall: the photographs are there, but choosing which ones to keep and how to put them together is another matter entirely. On 21 and 22 November, we’ll work through this with Vasantha Yogananthan (@vyogananthan), photographer and co-founder of Chose Commune (@chose_commune), joining us at Sugar Paper for DE/CONSTRUCTING YOUR STORY. You don’t need to bring a finished project. Bring the one you’re still unsure about, along with inexpensive prints to work with. 21–22 November 2026, 10am–6pm Sugar Paper · Via Cassiani 188/A, Modena, Italy Workshop held in English · Maximum 12 participants €250 if you register by 31 October, €300 thereafter. Lunch, water and coffee included on both days. Registration closes on 10 November. For information and registration, send us a DM or email info@sugarpaper.it.
