“The grind never stops, no one cares, work harder, no days off, winners never get tired, you can sleep when you’re dead, no pain no gain”. These sound familiar?

Listen, I love to work. I love to work at an unhealthy amount when I’m not careful. I used to work 12hr days, 6 or 7 days a week. If I took an off day, it still included work. Rest wasn’t a part of my vocabulary or my routine. I couldn’t even grasp the concept of slowing down.

To me, slowing down felt like failure. I thought taking a weekend meant I was lazy. So I sacrificed my mental and physical health, my relationships with friends and family, and my value to chase after the world’s standard for success. Turns out, I used work as a distraction and an excuse to fill a void I didn’t know was there. I avoided sitting alone with myself at all costs, because I knew there’d be too much to face. I preferred to live numb and out of touch with reality, ao I immersed myself in my work instead.

‼️REALITY CHECK ‼️ you’re not lazy, you’re burning yourself out.
- If you don’t stop the grind, the grind will stop you.
- You are enough outside of your vocation.
- You can be successful without compromising every other crucial aspect of your life- community, freedom, balance.

The mindsets I quoted above can dangerous when working in a profession you love and feel called into. You’ve been put in this place for a very specific reason, but in order to be present there, you have to be present with yourself and your life too.

The grind mentality may bring you instant gratification from money, recognition, and an inability to feel, but it will also bring inevitable downfall. It’s not the only piece to the puzzle. The puzzle requires many pieces that work together to reach the finished product. If you think that the last piece is all you need, you will be left feeling disappointed, exhausted, and resentful towards yourself, your work, and everyone around you.
