Exploring design through making at the @aaschool’s woodland campus, as part of the MArch and MSc postgraduate programmes.

POSTS STORIES REELS

A look back at the Wakeford Hall structure through a series of process drawings by Alumni Mane Reyes, exploring the ideas, details and design development behind the project.

These drawings explore the process, tool paths, photogrammetry, the structure through different layers, relationships and details, capturing the process of investigation and experimentation that takes place.

Autum at Hooke Park! 🍂

Members of the Design + Make team joined by colleagues from the AA’s main campus for a few days of making, preparing and developing the final elements for the showers façade.

A few glimpses of the work taking place behind the scenes.

More from this year’s Design + Make MSc final jury at Hooke Park, as the discussion returned to the completed truss and where the research might lead next

The conversation continued around the tables, where prototypes, details and tests traced the evolution of the truss connections through making. Openings up further discussion around geometry, fabrication, assembly and the decisions that shaped the final outcome.

After so many years at Hooke Park, we’re saying goodbye to Charlie Corry-Wright as he leaves the AA to start a new chapter with his family.
Charlie has been such a big part of Hooke over the years — always in the workshop, making, fixing, helping students and somehow knowing what to do when things went wrong!

The students and staff will miss you enormously, Charlie, and there’ll always be a place for you here. Thank you for everything you and your family have given to Hooke Park over the years. Your skill, care, humour and generosity have left a huge mark on this little clearing in the woods, and on all the students and staff, past and present, who’ve been lucky enough to spend time here.

Wishing you and your family all the very best for whatever comes next.

We’ll miss you. by @aadesignandmake

At this year’s Design + Make MSc final jury at Hooke Park, the conversation gradually shifted from the students’ presentations to the full-scale truss itself.

As everyone gathered closer to the work, its details, connections, structural logic and future possibilities became part of a more direct exchange of questions, observations and ideas.

✨ Final Jury Day ✨

Last Wednesday, our MSc Design + Make students came together for their final jury at Hooke Park, sharing their work through drawings, timber studies and a full-scale truss.

We spent the day talking through the project, looking closely at the details and exchanging ideas around the truss in the workshop. It was an amazing experience to bring everyone together and reflect on the research, making and building behind the work.

A day full of questions, reflections and lively conversations. Congratulations to our MSc students!

BespOak has been shortlisted for the Wood Awards 2026!

Developed by students and staff of the AA Design + Make programme at Hooke Park, BespOak transforms green oak branches into a prototype furniture piece, demonstrating how the natural irregularity of timber can become a design opportunity.

The table explores the relationship between the “grown” and the “made”, embracing the geometry of naturally branching oak and allowing each piece to play an active structural role while contributing to the character of the finished object.

Locally sourced green oak branches, harvested during routine woodland management, are combined with bespoke glulam leg components. Through hands on prototyping and digital fabrication, timber often considered firewood or waste becomes a primary structural component. Brass mechanical fixings allow the table to be disassembled, repaired and adapted over time.

A new wild shower structure is taking shape above the forest floor at Hooke Park.

Across two weeks, participants moved between the workshop and woodland, testing ideas, developing components and working on site.

Each summer, Hooke Park Build brings people together in the AA’s Dorset woodland to learn new skills and construct additions to the campus using timber, clay and other materials from the landscape.

The programme will return next year keep an eye on the AA website for details of the 2027 programme.

This year’s Hooke Park Build brought together a sequence of timber processes across site and workshop.

Outdoors, timber was debarked and prepared for use. In the Big Shed, work shifted to glulam fabrication, CNC machining, and the production of assembly jigs required for the build.

Over two weeks, participants lived and worked together at Hooke Park, developing new skills through hands-on collaboration and working directly with the materials.

Hooke Park Build will return next summer, keep an eye on the AA website for details of the 2027 programme.

Some updates and further details to the programme we have shared earlier.

DAY 1 We will spend the whole day visiting Tokyo Chainsaws and see how they do forestry in Tokyo.

DAY 2 The afternoon lecture by a Miyadaiku should be really exciting with lots of examples and explanations of the craft, and opportunities for students to try some of the techniques themselves.

DAY 2 EVENING We are lucky to be able to include a lecture by Kate Davies, Head of Hook Park and Co-Head of the Design and Make programme. She will give a talk at TODAI in the evening.

DAY 3 Will be another day with great speakers, when Professor Emeritus Seiichi Fukao will talk and show us around the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.
