Where does my love of bathing come from?!

Well, aside from the fact that it feels warm, fuzzy and fabulous, it allows me to reconnect with my family roots. 🥰 With grandparents born in Japan, Eastern Europe, and Italy — three of the world’s hot spring hotspots — saunas and bathhouses have always exerted a special fascination on me… ⛲️

A massive congrats to @darrylgibson and Nate Kaplan on bringing the drop dead gorgeous @grottobaths into the world.

Equal parts tropical bathing fantasia and brutalist fever dream, Grotto is a steamy love letter to Miami and one of the most design forward bathhouses I’ve ever been to. I couldn’t stop touching the floors, the walls, the textures, the colors... And I’ve never taken so many pictures of faucets before in my life 😂

Can’t wait to visit in my bathing suit next time. by @abathingadam

Just when you think you’ve hit every bathhouse in NYC… you stumble on a cosy little basement banya in deep Queens 🫧 And Forest Hills Spa is worth the trek, if only for the wooden cubbies tailor-made for a post-schvitz snooze — and some of the most surrealistic signage this side of a John Wilson movie 🧐 by @abathingadam

NYC AMPHIBIAN MODE UNLOCKED 🐸😝✌️

But seriously, circumnavigating Manhattan by jet ski with @carolyngrossman was probably the most delirious three hours I’ve had in my near-decade living in the Big Apple. All that was missing was a boombox blasting the Mission: Impossible soundtrack to take me to total nirvana. And a stretch session afterwards cos my back is killing me 😅 by @abathingadam

Cornwall or the Caribbean?! 🏊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏝️

A few highlights from swimming my way around southwest England, featuring…

🏝️ Britain’s most beautiful beach at Kynnance Cove, where the blue sky miraculously complied for the 15 mins we were in the water 🙌
🏛️ The magnificent saltwater geothermal Jubilee Pool in Penzance — with art deco stylings to boot
🏊🏊‍♂️ The iconic Hampstead swimming ponds — with Papa Tanaka in tow
🔥The gorgeous beachfront @kilnsauna in St Ives
😶‍🌫️ Sublimely foggy swimming in Sennen Cove, just a stone’s throw from Lands End, the westernmost point in England by @abathingadam

Keep calm and quarry on 🙌

A memorable swim in Foggintor Quarry, a sprawling Victorian chasm that supplied the granite for Nelson’s Column and sizeable chunks of Buckingham Palace ⛏️🪨🏛️

Tonight was a bathing first… my first ever visit to a pool on an active military base 😮 Thanks for the invite @allisonhopegreaker ! by @abathingadam

The supremely talented @luis_inca_ramos painted a love letter to the Sunset Park pool, my favorite pool in the world, where I’ve spent countless hours swimming, lounging, reading, floating, playing, chatting, daydreaming, dozing, and sunbathing with my fellow New Yorkers. Inca somehow captured all of that and more in this carnival of joy and color. You’ll see why the first painting I ever bought was one of his - it still has pride of place in our living room :) Inca’s work is part of a fantastic group show of Sunset Park artists on at @industrycity through August 30. Congrats to Tamavis and the curatorial team on a rich and moving tribute to the neighborhood. 🤍💛💚 by @abathingadam

A bobbing symphony. 800 bowls floating in 10,000 gallons of water. I haven’t seen an audience this spellbound since James Turrell at the Guggenheim. Magnificent. by @abathingadam

Found a little slice of sauna heaven in downtown New Haven 💫

Inspired by Ireland’s thriving urban sauna scene, @dryypsauna reimagines a vacant lot on main street as a mini wellness oasis.

Many of my favorite sauna experiences are embedded right in the heart of the city - where you can see pedestrians walking by, hear the rumble of traffic, and feel deeply connected to rhythms of the city while also recharging your batteries.

Big thanks to Mike for the hospitality and @badii.life for the pro CT sauna suggestions! And omg lemongrass is my new fave sauna scent 😇 by @abathingadam

A sauna session isn't just heat. It's choreographed.

Adam Bamba Tanaka walked us through Orpheus — a German tradition where a sauna master runs the room like a conductor: aroma, music, light, all moving the heat through the space on purpose.
It's not relaxation by accident. It's engineered.
