Getting old gets a bad rap! Come to our panel 11/9, Portland, Oregon! by @abbieros

✨ Psychedelics & the Reimagining of Aging ✨

What if getting older could open the door to something new?

Join Portland Psychedelic Society for a lively, thoughtful, and yes, fun conversation about psychedelics, aging, and the many ways we might reimagine what it means to grow older.

Older adults are increasingly becoming part of the psychedelic conversation. What’s behind that growing curiosity? What might psychedelic experiences offer as we navigate life’s later chapters? And could psychedelics change the way we think about aging itself?

We’ve gathered three fascinating voices for the conversation:

🌿 Abbie Rosner is a baby boomer and writer exploring how older adults are revisiting the drugs of our youth in new ways. Her new book, Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging, documents older adults using psychedelics for individual and collective transformation. She also writes The ELDEREVOLUTION Newsletter on Substack.

🌿 Phyllis Moses is dedicated to helping individuals discover their own resources for growth and healing.

🌿 Steve Rosonke, MD, is the founder of Rainfall Medicine, a ketamine center for consciousness and healing. He has also trained with Indigenous healers around the globe.

Come hear their perspectives, bring your questions, and explore the possibilities of aging, health, and meaning together.

Still feeling inspired after an incredible evening at Acheron! It was amazing to bring together the worlds of neuropsychology and psychedelic medicine and create a space for clinicians to connect, exchange ideas, and explore the intersection of these evolving fields.

A huge thank you to our incredible panelists for sharing their expertise and perspectives: Amanda Sacks-Zimmerman, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, Abbie Rosner, Elkhonon Goldberg, Ph.D., Michael Brustein, Psy.D., Theodora Kanellopoulos, Ph.D., and Ellen Gold, M.Ed., LMHC.

We’re also incredibly grateful to Melanie Forman, LMSW, and Acadia Healthcare for sponsoring the evening, and to everyone who joined us, asked thoughtful questions, and contributed to such an engaging conversation. Thank you for helping us continue building a community where clinicians can learn from one another and explore new ideas in mental health care.

Want to keep exploring the intersection of cognition and ketamine-assisted work? Dr. Amanda Sacks-Zimmerman will continue many of these themes during Acheron’s upcoming Ketamine-Assisted Cognitive Health Workshop on November 7.

What does it mean to age psychedelically? 🌙🍄

Friday night we gathered at @innermost.one with author @abbieros for a beautiful conversation about her new book “Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging” to talk about how psychedelics might help us re-imagine aging as a chapter for healing, curiosity, connection, pleasure, purpose, and transformation.

We were also so grateful to share a special work-in-progress screening of the animated short film Gray Trippers, exploring psychedelic experience later in life.

A huge thank you to Abbie for sharing her work and wisdom with us, to the filmmakers for trusting us with an early glimpse of the film, to InnerMost for welcoming us into their beautiful space, to Robin for holding down the fort and sharing her story, and to our whole team for assembling again and bringing another amazing night to life.

And, as always, thank you to every single person who came out, asked thoughtful questions, bought books, connected with one another, and filled the room with such amazing vibes before the big storm.

Swipe for the absolutely INSANE sunset NYC gave us alongside the Harvest Moon.

We live in a society that tries to sell women’s youth back to them in pills and shots and makeup and clothes and hair dye. Telling us that our lives all peak at girlhood, and that our value diminishes over time. It’s a shallow, materialist perspective that reduces all of us (men and women) to surface-level beings.

And as I approach my 37th birthday, I see getting older as a woman as a quiet act of “psychedelic rebellion”… and a badge of honor. That every grey hair or wrinkle is like a battle scar earned by surviving another year in this wild world… and NOT a reason to mourn some sort of “lost youth” simply because the culture wants women to remain physically childlike forever.

We’re a woman-run organization and are very lucky to have many female elders woven throughout this community. As friends, teachers, conspirators, mentors, and reminders that embracing aging as a woman is in and of itself a radical and psychedelic act.

End rant.

Rest in power, Gloria Steinem. ✊

Also if this resonated and you’re in or around NYC, please come out to our event at the end of the month with Abbie Rosner on her new book “Psychedelics & the Counterculture of Aging.”! Link in bio. by @abbieros

This book was such a thoughtful introduction to psychedelics throughout life’s aging transitions. I appreciate the stories of so many shared within its pages and thoughtful lens @abbieros utilized throughout her book! 📖

It offers a well rounded exploratory look at the possibilities of utilizing psychedelics as a tool as we explore cognitive flexibility, critical periods of learning and ongoing meaning making. 🧠

I resonated with her framing as she shares, “It bears repeating that psychedelics are not a one-time, miracle cure. For most people these are steps along the path on a journey of healing and self discovery. And most importantly, the therapeutic effects of psychedelics are only as robust as the extent to which they are integrated into one’s life.” ✨

May we embrace a new vision of elderhood and continually shed the layers that keep our vision of aging limited!

What if getting older doesn’t mean becoming more closed off, but becoming more open?

Abbie Rosner, author of "Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging", argues that older adults may need to rethink what they assume about psychedelics, moving beyond memories of “bad trips” and recreational drug culture toward intention, respect, healing, and growth.

Could altered states change how we imagine aging itself?

What if the substance didn’t change, you did?

When Abbie Rosner rediscovered cannabis later in life, the experience was completely different from what she remembered when she was younger.

Her explanation is fascinating: decades of life experience, therapy, meditation, and simply becoming more comfortable inside her own mind had changed the way she entered an altered state.

Maybe context isn’t just about where you are.

Maybe it’s also about who you’ve become.
