Where it all began, 7 years ago this week 🥰

After moving from New York City to Maine in 2015, I felt myself being pulled in a different direction with my purpose and work. I had spent the previous 7 years working as a jewelry designer, and while I loved the creative aspect of that work I was feeling called to be in service to others.

I had started taking classes at USM to become a clinical social worker and spent some time working in the field, when seemingly out of nowhere I had the urge to start crafting botanical skin care products. I literally had no idea what I was doing but as my collection of formulation books and ingredients grew, so did my momentum.

I promptly enrolled in aesthetics school as a way to learn more about the skin and the application of the products I was creating. I wasn’t sure where I was going with all of this but as each month of school passed, the vision became clearer. I didn’t just want to create the products, I wanted to create the setting where these products could be implemented as a ritual. Fresh out of school, I rented a studio space, signed up on Groupon and started seeing clients. Things got busy fairly quickly and it wasn’t long before I was ready for a storefront.

The first Abura location was a dream come to life: a beautiful sun drenched retail shop and lounge, a single treatment room and an open kitchen where I could make all of the Abura products on sight. I began holding workshops for product making but less than a year after opening we entered the pandemic era and well, you can imagine how that went !

I did my best to pivot with the times and held virtual workshops, continued shipping products for online orders, and even started crafting herbal beverages as we anxiously awaited the return of facial and massage services. Thankfully we made it through those times and in 2023 had the opportunity to expand and move Abura to our new location on Munjoy Hill. While the production operation is now off sight, Abura has evolved into a boutique spa with 2 treatment rooms, amazing practitioners, and an infrared sauna. It is an honor to be able to offer this sort of care to others. It turns out that this is how I serve ❤️ taken in Abura Skincare by @aetheric_beauty

In honor of an abundance of new followers (and Chloe’s adorable new work uniform), I thought it would be a good time to reintroduce myself and Abura!

I wrote an entire story about Abura’s creation but it turns out it’s too long for a post caption, so we’ll save those details for later 😂

My name is Amanda, and I am the creator of Abura, an endeavor I began a little over 10 years ago. What started as a sudden but undeniable urge to craft botanical skin care products has grown up to be a beautiful boutique spa and product line that I am truly proud of.

As the years have gone by, I have become particularly enthralled with my work doing treatments , especially “The Revival”, which is a sculpting facial that involves deep facial and buccal massage. The work has been transformative for those dealing with TMJ pain (I am one of them!) and as for the “sculpting and lifting” element—the results are visible!

My treatments are accompanied by a cinematic soundtrack, where I find myself in sort of trance, guided by the music. As my hands dance with the faces, necks, shoulders and scalps of my clients, it feels like I am tuned in and having a conversation through the body.

When I embarked on this journey with the desire to be in service to others, I had no idea it would look like this. But wow, am I grateful.

I am also so grateful to be accompanied by my dog Chloe, who is such a special being of light and love. Her excitement to be at work and with the clients is truly beautiful. She usually sleeps under the table during treatments but is available for snuggles upon request. (We call that the Chloe add on 🐶😂🥰) taken in Abura Skincare by @aetheric_beauty
