Yesterday, we gathered in Toronto to celebrate Johnny Tai, winner of the 2026 Won Lee Prize. NaAC staff Raewyn Reid and Morgan Possberg, alongside Board Member Curtis Sands, welcomed artists, supporters, community members, and partners to recognize Johnny's achievement and celebrate the impact of disability arts in Canada. The celebration was made even more meaningful as it marked the first event held at Joe's Place for Creativity since its official launch. We're so fortunate to have this welcoming space where our community can come together. The National accessArts Centre presented by TD (NaAC) is proud to announce that Vancouver artist Johnny Tai has been awarded the 2026 Won Lee Prize, Canada's largest cash prize for a visual artist with a disability. "Johnny brings a distinct perspective to the contemporary art world through his practice and tactile, braille-like drawings. His work pushes the boundaries of contemporary art and challenges us to think more expansively about the ways that we experience and engage with art in contemporary art spaces." – Jung-Suk (JS) Ryu, President & CEO, NaAC The announcement was made on October 29, 2026, at an event hosted by the NaAC at Joe's Place for Creativity in Toronto. NaAC at @ciffcalgary! Our artists and staff attended the Calgary International Film Festival this week, celebrating disability representation onscreen. Austin Robert Smith and Margo Mooney premiered their film GOING NOWHERE FAST as part of the Alberta Spirit Shorts, while the NaAC Film Ensemble caught MAN IN MOTION: THE RICK HANSEN STORY and PHREAKER- Stay tuned for reviews coming soon on @reverie_online! The National accessArts Centre is seeking applicants for sound.colLAB 2.0, an exciting paid opportunity for artists with disabilities to co-create an anthemic orchestral piece. The selected group will weave their individual musical ideas and lived experiences into a composition for full orchestra with the support of a professional composer signed to Deutsche Grammophon, a major global record label. Participating artists will each receive an honorarium between $3K-$5K for their contributions to the project (exact amount TBD). The resulting work will be premiered in a live performance by a professional orchestra.
