Mekhi’s story is the extreme end of what happens when a child is misunderstood from the very beginning. Arrested at ten. Failed by school. Misread by the adults around him. Pushed through a criminal justice system that never recognised the signs of a neurodivergent child in distress.

His sensory overwhelm and meltdowns were seen as “aggression.” His pain was treated as a problem….and instead of support, he was punished. That misunderstanding shaped his entire childhood and the path that followed.

In adulthood, with a late autism and ADHD diagnosis, he’s now having to learn emotional regulation from the ground up. He’s learning who he is. He describes it as being born again but carrying the knowledge of everything that went wrong.

His story shows why diagnosis matters. Why behaviour is communication, and why we need to understand the difference between aggression and sensory overload in children, before systems turn their struggles into criminality.

It’s time to recognise these signs early…and it’s time to stop punishing difference.
