Procrastinators and busy folks unite! It is 3:45 pm here in California and if you are seeing this now and have not yet cast your ballot, I want to remind you that your vote counts and it is not too late! As long as you are in line before the polls close at 8:00, you can vote! If you haven’t registered yet, California has same day registration. Better late than never! #vote by @acrasmussen

Throwback to a reminder from a past Halloween and an equally consequential election. We gotta vote!

Democracy at its simplest means rule by the people. We are the ones who have the power to choose our elected officials and in turn, shape what our government does and does not do. Voting is at the heart of that power.

Don’t forget to submit your ballot by no later than Tuesday, November 3!

Gather info from the Secretary of State’s website and your local county Registrar.

Just a reminder from your friendly neighborhood political science professor(and amateur collage artist).

Made from cuttings of the many fliers I’ve been receiving about candidates and propositions. Thanks to my wonderful friend @claudine_jaenichen for doing her magic to make the image I took of my little collage so much more clear and bright. by @acrasmussen

This most recent trip around the sun has been a bit topsy-turvy to say the least, but grateful for every single day past present and future. The time walking through new spaces and places, the moments spent connecting and reconnecting with good friends and loved ones, every smile my adorable and often hilarious dog Frida brings, pushing myself far outside my comfort zone with new classes, projects and adventures even amidst loss. New modes of creativity. Making time to look up at the astonishing and unique beauty in the sky. Here’s to each of you who made this year a lovely one. Thank you for all the birthday wishes this week, they mean the world.

P.S. And since I am a political science professor, I would be remiss if I did not also take this opportunity to remind you to vote! by @acrasmussen

In the final episode of this first season of the Good Work podcast, I spoke to Sandy Wall @sandyysmiles — about @pueblitatortillas and that conversation had so much that stuck with me. Here’s a little sampling of some of her wisdom, earned over more than half a decade of this remarkable community-driven endeavor. Should be of interest to anyone who is seeking to craft something that is unique to their story but also meaningful and impactful to those around them.

Season One, Episode Ten available anywhere that you listen and at the link in bio.

This week’s guest on the Good Work podcast is Sandy Wall, the founder of Pueblita Tortillas, a community-driven platform rooted in culture, connection, wellness, and storytelling.

In this episode, Wall shares how what started over five years ago during the pandemic— selling homemade corn tortillas from her kitchen and creating space for community online—has evolved into a growing effort that brings people together through run clubs, wellness events, creative experiences, free community activities, and cultural initiatives across Southern California.

In the process, we cover how one can build a local social entrepreneurship effort in a way that serves others while also avoiding burnout from what happens when one does good work alongside the 9 to 5.

We also share how purpose, a little “magic” and choosing good work that resonates with one’s identities can help one to make an impact.

This episode will be of special interest to all those who dream of creating a project of meaning that is uniquely theirs but also want some practical sense of how to get such an effort off the ground and keep it going over time.

I loved the answer that Chaundra Prehara gave in this week’s episode of the podcast when I asked her about how one might make a decision about which #goodwork to do, especially when many of us feel a sense of pressure and urgency to pick the “right” thing.

This week, I am joined by Chaundra Prehara, a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified relational life therapist, and an experienced group leader. Prehara’s personal story and her expertise each bring so many lessons: for the increasingly large number of people considering a career as a therapist, but also for anyone seeking to do good work that is also good for them. There are some clear pivots in her educational and professional journey, which took her from a film major in undergrad to a range of corporate roles through to her current calling as a therapist. Yet, through it all, there are some common themes, like a focus on storytelling, self-connection, and having an impact when one may lean toward a quieter and more introverted way of being. Prehara also shares some key insights relevant to anyone who may sometimes have a sense of overwhelm or put too much pressure on themselves as they work to improve the world around them. There are also some insights from the relational approach for how to assess one’s work environment to determine when a pivot might make sense, as well as how one can stay attuned to their own heart, relationality, and intrinsic worth in the spaces in which they live and work.

Is there a project that you’ve undertaken that you’re particularly proud of or in which you have found particular meaning? This is a question that I ask every guest who comes on the Good Work podcast.

I ask that question because it is a way to get into the nitty-gritty and away from generalities, something I learned in my training as a social scientist doing research interviews is a way to dig down into lived experience.

But it also helps us to understand how that person thinks and what they value. Especially when they have a host of possibilities to choose from!

And I think it also helps us to normalize looking over the work that we do, and being proud of it, open to sharing our accomplishments, even when they are still sometimes works in progress.

And if you hadn’t guessed by now, I loved @megstoneimpact ‘s answer, and the way that she put it into the context of the larger work that @impactboston does.

Passion is ingredient number one. But the skills that are needed to do good work are also part of the recipe. Meg Stone and I spoke about this topic exactly on this week’s episode of the Good Work podcast. Link in bio or find GOOD WORK wherever you listen.

This week in the podcast, I welcome violence prevention expert Meg Stone, the executive director of @impact_boston and author of two books, The Cost of Fear and Don’t Fight Back. We discuss Stone’s career path, starting with how she found her area of focus via her college women’s studies program, which introduced her to some inspiring practitioners via her courses and academic internships. She has held a host of roles in domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy, with a great deal of hands-on work in family court and shelters, in education, and in her current leadership role at IMPACT Boston. Stone describes building IMPACT’s self-defense classes into a broader set of trainings that help folks to be empowered even while under stress and across a range of situations. In the process, she reflects on stepping into leadership during organizational transition and the current and challenging nonprofit funding landscape. We also discuss some important practical insights for those seeking to start of pivot into nonprofit work, including the importance of valuing the underlying tasks and skills that make mission-driven work possible.

The little homegrown creation that is this podcast has gotten me through some hard days over the last year when life was really life-ing. It has allowed me to re-find my purpose and chart my direction more firmly. It has also been providing so much joy as I connect with such amazing people to make it. I am even getting to pull out my old graphic design hat and am learning new skills each week which is my kind of fun. And of course, there are so many connections to my teaching and mentoring. The synergy is magical! In short, MAKING it is a real joy from start to finish.

But once it went out into the world, a new layer came. It goes beyond just my sense of things. It felt more nerve-wracking!!

So, when a family member said they were going to share an episode with their son who is in college, that made my day. When I ran into a couple former students who said they’d been listening since the start, that meant so much as well. When a longtime mentor let me know they were cheering me on, that meant the world. And when someone just sent me this pic today while they were heading out to run some errands— well it made me smile so big. To know it is out in the world! 😱 and 🤩!

It means something that folks who I know and also those I don’t know personally are finding resonance with the podcast’s theme of doing good work that is also good for you. It makes me so happy that others are finding the same inspiration in my guests and their stories that I have — especially as inspiration feels a bit hard to come by and challenges are getting bigger and more complex out there.

Grateful to each of you who has been listening and sending me little notes (and now, pics!) here or there. 🙏. It means more than you know. And there is much more to come. I’ve got more interviews recorded and am going to be beginning to do some new ones later this week. A really special one too! I can’t wait for you to hear from these folks. And as always, love hearing your thoughts along the way, so message me anytime!

P.S. and a PSA: Stay cool out there, SoCal friends! This heat and humidity are no joke!
