I’m genuinely so lucky to see Gretta perform, and I’m not saying this entirely in a “oh because she’s so special to see” way even though that very much is equally important too considering that is true. But unlike other artists this actually has weight to it considering the absolute turmoil she has gone through to have come out the other side. I cannot physically put into words the experience that Gretta went through as only she can explain her own experiences being in hospital half way across the world, and she does very much touch on that in this album specifically, but once her health took the turn it did, I wasn’t talking about when the next time I saw Gretta perform, but more a matter of if. Gretta has never been a person of ifs, someone who continues to fight on whatever she sets her mind towards and that has led her back to this stage where we have something truly gorgeous. This is not the first time I’ve seen Gretta since those health issues mind, that was of course Liminal Space which most here will be very familiar with, but this is the first time I’ve seen her since she released that album Heartsong and the revealing of a lot more medical history in that time. I always had a genuinely strong affinity towards her and her music, but the way she performs now I just feel so in awe of her. Even in tonight’s performance there were things that went wrong, having to start with a backup guitar, then realising this guitar didn’t work as expected either so having to improvise from there, and the tuner batteries dying there’s somehow a metaphor in all that. Despite the challenges along the way during the show, she soldiered on and did it in her usual self-deprecating way that is as much as the show as it is the music. I don’t know for the life of me how I managed to bring back memory the lyrics from Going Through It but somehow my brain switched into gear for it! This is a celebration of 10 years of music, from the “stoopid” early years to the professional sad music that we have today on the new album, being brought to life on this church stage. It’s an experience where its a service in itself. Castlemaine tomorrow and I can’t wait to do it all again! by @adamvelo02
A familiar face but an unusual place, today we have a viral content creator who has been working around music for many years, yet recently took the plunge of releasing music himself. How different are the worlds of the two pathways and more importantly, Do You Like to Dance? Questions all discovered on today's episode as we enter Aus Music Month! In amongst an incredible New Music Friday sits a true gem with Juice Webster's new album Kind of Fantasy. An album that was written amongst such a challenging period for Juice and all that raw emotion is bottled within each track of this release. A true gem who is set to kick off an album tour alongside this release which will be such an experience to witness. As this episode deals heavily with mental health related issues if you are struggling personally, there's support lines to help you through difficult times such as BeyondBlue or your region's main services. What can I say about this gig when it’s basically the music equivalent of a box of Cadbury favourites, you wonder how they all come together in one place yet somehow it just happens to work. This event celebrates the ongoing success of The Corner Hotel as a venue with a 30 year anniversary, with this one in particular focusing on community. First up was Tilly Fenton who I have liked for a while but somehow the dates never lined up to see her, and like London Buses she appears one after the other. while Lucky Girl is the title of the track, lucky is maybe not what you’d describe getting a 20min timeslot, but she absolutely made the most of it to a strong enthusiastic front row supporting her the whole way. Moving on comes two of the highlights of the night for excitement for me going in, the first one, Juice Webster on the eve of her newest album release. I am in awe of this album and the depths of it and she really is such an amazing performer that gets everyone in attention. I can’t believe what inspired this body of work and yet she has perfected it in every way. And Darcie, what haven’t I written about Darcie across the last three years at least, while she’s only had the couple of outings this year on stage you cannot tell with her supreme confidence and her pure heart that is so easy to connect to across the set. If anyone was rusty it was me tripping a couple of times but every time is well worth the effort to get out and see. Then we move to Fanny, which is most likely to get this post censored out of all the artists here, so instagram if you are listening I am talking about the country singer. Well country entry point as Fanny herself describes it, as well as entry level Line Dancing which never really feels entry level. Nevertheless the type of person who you could hear talk about anything with a voice that just oozes a charm that makes you really think “I love Fanny” (again I’m talking about the country singer instagram don’t you dare). Finally San Cisco, while from the back of the room this is just such a nostalgic moment to be there for. Triple J icons from their time, and performing brand new songs too, capping off an Aus music feast for all! by @adamvelo02
Tonight was definitely a pretty good show in Old Fitzroy, listening to the best album Dan Sultan has put out (his words of course, I’m not going to spend time here debating that claim too hard either), which for someone who is a seven time ARIA Award winner across the most different genres is a high bar to be reaching. Not even a tickled throat could really stop this powerhouse performer from putting on his trademark performance, and even if it did we are always informed no refunds in his dry humour tone. Fitzroy is the heart of everything that Dan has done and to come back after these years to the venue that it started out in too, a definitive little miracle. The focus was on the brand new album, which opened the set, and in terms of full circles one of the songs in particular Atlas is most important to that having been written to the exact time 7 years after Dan committed to sobriety in his life. Such sobriety has rebirthed everything that Dan has done as a performer and writer, but more importantly as an all round person which is genuinely the most important aspect of it all. Then of course the setlist moved into the songs that have been so important in his career, ones of which the audience engages immediately after the first few chords are played. Dan’s humour once again comes in with this time when the crowd does react, pointing out that it only really works when the entire crowd does it or otherwise it just doesn’t make sense. Despite being an established star, numbers don’t always matter as such as others think, Dan is a storyteller and people engaging in the story is so much more important to him than charts. Even still this album is more than deserving of taking a spot high up in said charts and I’m not saying this because he’s locked the door on the venue unless people purchase a copy, I’ve already got mine at home. All in all though Dan is just a powerhouse performer having been at the top of his game for two decades, a longevity that many artists could genuinely never believe is possible. I also sense that there won’t be any slowing down in the future either for his success. by @adamvelo02
kayls returns to the program to talk about their latest release CHEST!! A song about being too afraid to speak up about things in fear of being too much or upsetting friendships. Also covered in the song is a story of gender identity as someone who goes by non binary pronouns and getting people to understand that too. Available on YouTube and streaming now by @adamvelo02
Tonight the songbird did not have her wings clipped, in fact she grew a pair of wings instead! This is Heleina Zara’s first ever headline show, yet it looks as natural as any other performance she has done but turned up to 11. The way the EPs weave together with the brutal honesty of Breaking Point joining what Autopilot previously laid out just creates such a symphony that is a joy to be in the room with. She has evolved her own way and brought an energy that really has a special place of standing up for herself when approaching breaking point. The environment that was set up being a free headline event is such a massive test for artists to see how they can make or break themselves when the crowd is a mix between fans and attendees at the tavern on a Saturday night, and Heleina rose to that occasion. Challenging those within the space to be involved in the show and you could hear all the noise slowly dissipate and focus on the event at hand. One thing that always strikes a chord to me is family of an artist and how they engage too, and seeing Heleina’s mum being just as involved in her daughter’s dream with bringing white flags to wave during Middle Man as well as being on merch duties, I genuinely feel such a joy and power to that. When you especially consider the pushback Heleina has received in some moments having her in her corner just really completes the show. Heleina is such a wonderful pop star and to have been introduced to her music during The Big Pop Show of 2023 (although there is a sense of irony remembering Canada facts now), to then continue to have the privilege of speaking to her about this body of work, and subsequently watching a top tier performance of it three years onwards is truly inspiring to see. You can really appreciate that extra maturity that has come from honing her craft over these years, and while it probably wasn’t by choice or ideal to have had to sit on this work, it’s been perfected from some incredible introductions to Heleina’s team and kitbag. Although as a last note if you are ever considering inviting her to be part of your New Years party, maybe bring some precautions surrounding just in case of emergency… by @adamvelo02
I’m getting to see Kaiyah Mercedes before they’re a famous person (how cute)! …I ran 555 different variations of that opening post line and this is the one I settled on, so if it’s not to your standards sue me. This was an enthralling show to watch especially after having an in depth chat about the stories that shaped this EP recently. Kaiyah just brings the show out from the very first minute, there’s such a joy to seeing performers that are clearly having just as much as a good time as the attendees and they clearly have that going for them. To think it’s been a while since their last headliner performance yet you couldn’t see any of the rust appearing at all is a testament to the professionalism of Kaiyah, especially after a quick recovery from an injury too to get the show happening the way they want it to be. And there’s one thing that’s quite magical about the space that this was held in and how it interacts with the performance. Look around at all the posters on the walls of these rooms and you’ll see all the legendary names to have graced the stage here at the Espy basement, but this show has one thing that makes it a rarity in the fact all the main performers all identify as non binary. This is just such a cool thing to have with Kaiyah making a space that everyone feels comfortable being there and creating genuine history in the space. All while fighting a, in their words, Marilyn Monroe moment from the airstream at the front of the stage. Although considering the cover that was sung (The Cure) maybe an Olivia Rodrigo moment is more appropriate considering more recent history. Shoutout to Kat Greta giving it all on the drums too, utter professional that I love seeing every time up there no matter the performer paired with her. As well as that space filled with so many creative people that I have so much respect for as creators and people as a general, I haven’t seen a room as creative so tightly like that across my memory at very least. I would never have missed Kaiyah perform tonight, and miss out on What Comes Next with this show. by @adamvelo02
There's a sense of irony about releasing an interview over Zoom about a song that talks about being on screens often, but nonetheless ELYK looked past that ironic nature and sat down with me to have a chat about their latest release Sunday on the lead up to their show. While one guest is good, two guests are great with two members of the band with double discussion of this release. Available on YouTube and streaming now by @adamvelo02
I was at Breaking Point making sure to land this guest when I saw the EP announcement, an incredibly special artist who makes these heartbreaking anthems with a strong power to them. Heleina talks about it all and her own debut headline show that is to come! I also never promised to be impartial with the shirt for this interview, sorry not sorry. Available now on YouTube and streaming by @adamvelo02
Kaiyah rolls up and tells us What Comes Next from their new EP that just landed. An EP years in the making after two previous record releases, which is reversed of what is normally expected. However Kaiyah tells us why now is the time and why these stories are released together. Also tell us what your favourite of Kaiyah's wonderful vinyl collection is? No one knows what a Jellyfish truly is without a degree in science, but what I do know is that no Jellyfish made it to the Alex The Astronaut show tonight. Which is quite unfortunate really when you think about it. Jellyfish aside though this show is so beautifully simple with Alex, a guitar and 12(ish, not counting encore performances) songs that take you to so many different places across the set it can only be The Weird One. But even that is underselling it, of course it’s joyful sounding songs with the outliers of Nan-IRA discourse (this is why Alex has a script so they stick to after all). But ultimately you actually pay close attention, slow everything down and listen carefully, it’s actually themes that are challenging the establishment and calling out behaviour that society has continually let slip to the detriment of many livelihoods. These songs are purely from the heart and mind pleading for a better world overall, but are packaged in names like Happy Song, I Like to Dance and a fair chunk of the new EP. Alex truly has lived so many lives in the last few years, which has given new tales that are about perspective shifting. And the whole time they are all about advocacy during the show, including spending time educating about the downfall that comes with streaming services. Their monthly income from it doesn’t even crack close to covering a liveable wage and they are one of the more successful and notable artists that have been around the last decade. Genuinely an unbelievable show, and ultimately wherever Dolly Parton is in a version of Nashville, I can see her smiling down at how her name inspires Alex as an artist. This infectious energy and enthusiasm despite being knocked down time and time again is exactly why I keep coming back to these shows. by @adamvelo02
