September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

I don’t talk about this part of my life very often. Maybe because even years later, it’s difficult to put into words what it feels like to reach a point where being here feels harder than not being here.

I’ve known that feeling. More than once.

There have been moments in my life when I was much closer to not being here than most people around me ever knew. Moments when I genuinely could not imagine a version of my life where I would feel okay again. When I couldn’t see past the pain I was in, and I was convinced that the way I felt in that moment was the way I would feel forever.

It wasn’t.

And sometimes that realization breaks my heart a little.

Because I think about the version of me who was hurting that badly and wish I could somehow go back and show her everything she would miss.

The people she hadn’t met yet. The places she hadn’t been. The nights she would laugh until she couldn’t breathe. The people who would love her. The home she would make. The things she would accomplish. The completely ordinary days that she would one day be so grateful she got to live.

She had no idea how much life was still waiting for her.

Mental health doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. You can laugh. You can show up. You can go to school or work. You can make plans for next weekend while privately wondering if you even want a next weekend. Some of the people fighting the hardest battles in their own minds are incredibly good at making sure nobody else can see them.

So please, check on your people. Tell them you love them. Ask twice when they tell you they’re fine. And if you’re the person struggling, please tell somebody. You don’t need to have the right words. You don’t need to know how everything gets better. You just need to give yourself the opportunity to find out that it can.

There is an entire life on the other side of moments you once thought you’d never survive.

I know because I’m living mine.

And more than anything, I’m really glad I stayed long enough to meet the person I became.
